Emden-based OFD to Maintain Air Connectivity to Juist
Emden, Germany – The Ostfriesischer Flugdienst (OFD) has announced the launch of daily flights connecting Emden to the North Sea island of Juist, effective March. This news follows the recent announcement by FLN Frisia-Luftverkehr that it will cease its flight operations between Norddeich and Juist beginning in March.
According to the flight schedule published on OFD’s website, there will be two daily departures from both Emden and Juist from Monday to Sunday – one in the morning and one in the afternoon. The flight duration is estimated to be approximately 15 minutes. Efforts to contact the company for further information were unsuccessful.
The decision to discontinue flights by FLN had prompted concerns about the island’s accessibility. Juist Mayor Tjark Goerges commented that the island was actively pursuing alternative providers to ensure continued air connectivity. He emphasized that the lack of air travel would significantly impact both visitors and residents, limiting their travel options and affecting the island’s economy.
"This has substantial consequences that should not be underestimated," Goerges said. "Without an air connection, the island would only be accessible by fast boats, water taxis, or the island ferry."
In addition to the announcement of OFD’s new flight services, there has been ongoing discussion regarding the accessibility of the Juist airport, which is located outside the main village. The island authorities stated that they are developing a public transportation plan to improve connectivity between the airport and the village center.
