Eisbären Berlin Roar Back with U23 Standouts in DEL Rout

Berlin Polar Bears Ignite Playoffs Countdown with Dominant Display

Berlin Eisbären head coach Serge Aubin couldn’t have been more satisfied with his team’s restart following the international break of the German Ice Hockey League (DEL). His squad delivered a resounding 10-2 victory over Düsseldorfer EG, showcasing the qualities that will be crucial as the playoffs draw near in just over a month.

"Of course, it was a good night for us. I liked how we played in the right way and we got rewarded for it," Aubin remarked after Wednesday’s match. "The guys played as a unit, everybody did their job. We won our battles and made the right decisions."

The first offensive line consisting of Ty Ronning, Leonhard Pföderl, and Frederik Tiffels contributed significantly to the overwhelming win, collectively registering five goals. However, the six U23 players that Aubin fielded, primarily due to the absence of veteran players like Zach Boychuk, Manuel Wiederer, and Gabriel Fontaine, also impressed. Korbinian Geibel (22) and Eric Hördler (20) scored spectacular goals, while Maxim Schäfer (17) and Matej Leden (20) notched assists.

"It’s fun to see them grow," Aubin said of his young professionals. "In this game, I had the chance to give them a little bit more ice time. And I think they did a really good job."

Defenseman Adam Smith, who recently joined Berlin Eisbären from Czech first division club HC Oceláři Třinec, integrated seamlessly into the team’s strong performance. "It was electric. The fans are unreal here," the 28-year-old Canadian stated after his Eisbären debut.

Attacking Prowess and Youthful Brilliance

The first line’s dominant display was a testament to their exceptional chemistry and skill. Ronning, Pföderl, and Tiffels combined their finesse and physicality to create scoring opportunities at will. Ronning, in particular, was a constant threat, constantly pressuring the opposition defense and generating high-quality chances.

The U23 players also seized their opportunity to shine, demonstrating their potential and hunger to contribute. Geibel’s stunning solo effort and Hördler’s powerful shot were particularly impressive. Schäfer and Leden, despite their youth, played with composure and vision, setting up their teammates for goals.

A Sign of Depth and Resilience

The absence of experienced players due to injuries and suspensions could have been a setback, but the Eisbären youngsters stepped up to the plate with aplomb. Their ability to fill the void and perform at a high level bodes well for the team’s depth and resilience.

With the playoffs rapidly approaching, Aubin’s ability to rely on a capable group of young players, in addition to his established veterans, provides him with valuable options. The team’s overall performance against Düsseldorfer EG was a reassuring display of their readiness to compete for the championship.

A New Addition Blends In

Smith’s seamless transition into the Eisbären defense further strengthens the team’s resolve. The 28-year-old Canadian brings a wealth of experience and physicality to the blue line, complementing the existing defensive core. His ability to adapt quickly and contribute effectively on his debut augurs well for his future impact.

Looking Ahead to the Playoffs

The emphatic victory over Düsseldorfer EG has undoubtedly injected confidence into the Eisbären squad. With just over a month remaining until the playoffs, they will seek to maintain their momentum and fine-tune their game plan.

Aubin’s focus will be on ensuring his team continues to play as a cohesive unit, executing their game plan with discipline and precision. The blend of experienced veterans and promising youngsters gives him a potent mix of talent and determination. If the Eisbären can sustain this level of performance, they will be a formidable force to reckon with in the playoffs.
