The exhibit celebrates the profound influence of Black identity and style on the cultural landscape. Diddy’s own rise, interwoven with the Met Gala’s ascent, makes his current situation all the more tragic.
Combs, a master of reinvention, known by monikers like Puff Daddy, Puffy, and P. Diddy, was a Met Gala regular, his presence a testament to his influence. His Sean John clothing brand catapulted him to international acclaim, earning him the distinction of being the first Black man to receive a Council of Fashion Designers of America Award in 2004. He boldly declared his brand as the "original luxury street brand."
Diddy’s fashion evolution was a spectacle in itself. He seamlessly shifted between luxe streetwear emblazoned with his logo and impeccably tailored suits. He even employed an umbrella-holding butler, stylist, and certified "aughts dandy," Fonzworth Bentley, whom he defended as part of his entertainment brand.

He could have envisioned himself as a co-chair, orchestrating the night’s ambiance and curating the guest list. This year’s co-chairs, including rapper A$AP Rocky, actor Colman Domingo, race car driver Lewis Hamilton, and producer Pharrell, along with honorary co-chair LeBron James, exemplify the intersection of Black talent and fashion influence that Diddy once embodied.
Now, instead of avant-garde ensembles and designer statements, Diddy’s courtroom attire is a stark contrast: a judge-approved collection of shirts, sweaters, slacks, and laceless shoes. This is the attire under which prosecutors will present their case, alleging that Diddy ran a criminal enterprise encompassing kidnapping, arson, physical violence, and sex trafficking.
The unraveling began with a bombshell civil suit filed by his ex-girlfriend, Casandra "Cassie" Ventura Fine, in November 2023. Cassie alleged rape, physical abuse, and sex trafficking at the hands of Combs.
