Dertour Acquires Majority of Hotelplan Group, Expanding European Presence

Dertour Acquires Hotelplan Group, Strengthening Presence in Switzerland, UK, and Germany

Dertour, a subsidiary of the Rewe Group, has acquired the Swiss travel conglomerate Hotelplan Group from the retail company Migros. This acquisition will significantly boost Dertour’s presence as a travel provider in Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and Germany.

Transaction Details and Exclusions

The purchase encompasses four of Hotelplan Group’s five business units, specifically travel mediation and organization in Switzerland, Germany, and the United Kingdom. Notably, the holiday home specialist Interhome is excluded from the transaction. Financial details pertaining to the acquisition have not been disclosed.

No Change for Customers and Partners

Ingo Burmester, Board Member of Dertour Group, emphasized that this acquisition will not impact clients, guests, or sales partners of Hotelplan Group. Both Hotelplan and Migros Ferien will continue to offer bookings and services as usual.

About Hotelplan Group

Headquartered in Glattbrugg, Switzerland, Hotelplan Group is a leading provider of leisure and business travel. With approximately 2,500 employees, the company reported a turnover of 1.78 billion Swiss francs in 2024.

About Dertour

Dertour, founded in 1917, is one of the largest tour operators in Europe. With over 10,000 employees, the company specializes in package tours, cruises, and individual travel arrangements. Dertour is a subsidiary of the Rewe Group, a German retail and tourism conglomerate.

Significance of the Acquisition

This acquisition is a strategic move that consolidates Dertour’s position as a leading travel provider in Europe. By integrating Hotelplan Group’s robust operations and extensive customer base, Dertour gains a significant competitive advantage in key markets.

Expansion in Switzerland

Dertour has been present in Switzerland since 2016, when it acquired Kuoni Reisen. The acquisition of Hotelplan Group will bolster Dertour’s presence in this market and enable it to offer a broader portfolio of travel products and services.

Strengthening in Germany

Dertour is already one of the largest tour operators in Germany, but the acquisition of Hotelplan Group’s German operations will further solidify its market share. Hotelplan Group has a strong brand presence and a loyal customer base in Germany, which will be complementary to Dertour’s existing business.

Entry into the UK Market

For Dertour, this transaction marks its entry into the UK travel market. Hotelplan Group has established operations in the UK under the brand name Travelhouse UK. This acquisition will provide Dertour with a solid foundation to grow its presence in this market.

Future Outlook

The acquisition of Hotelplan Group is expected to enhance Dertour’s overall financial performance and create synergies in operations. By combining the strengths of both companies, Dertour is well-positioned to capture growth opportunities and remain a competitive force in the European travel industry.
