On Saturday morning, a mass shooting occurred at UPMC Memorial in York, Pennsylvania, claiming the lives of two individuals, including the suspected gunman, and injuring six others.

Suspect’s Actions

At approximately 10:35 a.m., the suspect, identified as 49-year-old Diogenes Archangel-Ortiz, entered the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) armed with a handgun and zip ties. He took the ICU staff hostage, firing shots and binding a nurse’s hands.

Archangel-Ortiz then left the ICU and entered a hallway, still holding the gun and a hospital staff member.

Police Response

Police were called to the scene and confronted the suspect in an attempt to de-escalate the situation. However, the suspect refused to comply, forcing officers to open fire. Three officers were hit, one of whom, Andrew Duarte, was fatally struck.

In addition to Archangel-Ortiz and Duarte, the following individuals were injured in the shooting:

Suspect’s Motive

As of Monday morning, officials continued to investigate the motive behind the attack. However, they disclosed that Archangel-Ortiz had visited a friend in the hospital days before the shooting and had interacted with hospital staff.

Andrew Duarte: Honored for Service

Officer Duarte, the slain police officer, was praised for his bravery and dedication. He had served with the West York Borough Police Department since 2022 and was a former officer with the Denver Police Department for five years.

Investigation and Aftermath

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing, with officials seeking to determine whether Duarte was shot by Archangel-Ortiz or by friendly fire from the other officers.

UPMC Memorial in York is a five-level facility with 104 private patient rooms. It opened in 2019 and provides a wide range of medical services to the community.

Diogenes Archangel-Ortiz: Background

According to court records, Archangel-Ortiz had a minor criminal record, including charges for driving on a suspended license in 2023 and harassment and contempt in 2016.

The West York Borough Police Department expressed profound grief over the loss of Officer Duarte, while Governor Josh Shapiro commended the fallen officer for his life of service.
