Dave Portnoy Lashes Out at ABC Affiliate Over Interview Regarding Antisemitic Incident at Barstool Bar

Dave Portnoy, the founder of Barstool Sports, has publicly criticized ABC’s Philadelphia affiliate, WPVI-TV, following an interview concerning an antisemitic incident that occurred at one of Barstool’s bars in the city. Portnoy expressed his outrage and frustration in a video posted to his X account, alleging that the interview took an unfair and biased turn.

According to Portnoy, the local ABC affiliate had actively sought an interview with him regarding the incident. He stated that after initially agreeing to speak with a specific reporter, a different reporter arrived for the interview. While Portnoy did not disclose the names of either reporter, he described the experience as manipulative and agenda-driven.

Portnoy explained that the interview began with pertinent questions about the antisemitic incident and the company’s responsibility in addressing the situation. However, he claimed that the reporter then abruptly shifted the focus by introducing a quote from a college professor who allegedly stated that Barstool Sports "creates a culture of harassment." Portnoy vehemently objected to this line of questioning, arguing that it unfairly implicated him and the company in the hateful act.

"Basically, that I’m responsible for this happening at my own bar I never heard the quote," Portnoy said in the video. "You’re saying some f—ing liberal college professor said they don’t like Barstool. And I was like well who f—ing said it? What is this even journal?"

Portnoy indicated that a colleague, who was present with him in Scottsdale, Arizona, ahead of the Barstool Sports Bet Gala, began recording the interview upon recognizing the reporter’s perceived bias. Portnoy subsequently posted a clip of the interview to his X account, where he is seen drawing a parallel between the antisemitic incident at the bar and the harassment Jewish students allegedly face on college campuses. He suggested that universities that tolerate such harassment contribute to an environment where antisemitism can thrive.

The released clip shows the interview escalating into a contentious exchange. Portnoy is seen questioning the reporter about the source of hate in the world, asking, "Who’s creating more hate in the world right now? Are you saying Barstool Sports and White men or college campuses?"

Shortly after this exchange, Portnoy terminated the interview, expressing his anger and frustration with the situation. "F— ABC!" Portnoy exclaimed in the video. "It makes mad! God, how much I hate f—ing ‘journalists.’" The video, shared widely on social media, contained explicit language reflecting Portnoy’s intense emotions.

Fox News Digital reached out to WPVI-TV for comment on the incident but did not receive an immediate response.

The controversy stems from an incident at a Barstool-branded bar in Philadelphia’s Center City neighborhood. A video circulating online showed a sign bearing the words "f— the Jews" displayed at the bar, accompanied by bottle-service girls and what appeared to be a celebratory atmosphere. The video sparked outrage and condemnation from various groups and individuals, prompting an investigation by the Philadelphia Police Department.

The Philadelphia Police Department confirmed to Fox News Digital earlier on Monday that they had launched an investigation into the incident. The police investigation is ongoing, and authorities have not yet released any details about potential suspects or motives.

Dave Portnoy and Barstool Sports have faced significant scrutiny and criticism in the wake of the incident. While Portnoy has condemned the antisemitic sign and stated that those responsible would be held accountable, he has also defended the company’s overall values and denied any tolerance for hate speech.

The incident and the subsequent interview have ignited a broader debate about the role of media bias, the responsibility of businesses to address hateful conduct, and the prevalence of antisemitism in society.

Portnoy’s supporters have praised his handling of the situation, arguing that he has taken swift action to condemn the antisemitic message and ensure that those responsible are held accountable. Critics, however, have accused Portnoy and Barstool Sports of fostering a culture that enables and normalizes offensive behavior.

The controversy underscores the complex and sensitive nature of discussions surrounding antisemitism and hate speech. It also highlights the challenges that businesses face in managing their public image and responding to incidents that occur at their establishments.

The incident at the Barstool bar in Philadelphia is a stark reminder of the persistence of antisemitism and the need for continued efforts to combat prejudice and discrimination. The incident has also raised questions about the role of social media in amplifying hateful messages and the responsibility of individuals to speak out against intolerance.

The fallout from the incident is likely to continue in the coming days and weeks. The police investigation is ongoing, and it remains to be seen whether any charges will be filed. The controversy has also prompted renewed calls for Barstool Sports to address its corporate culture and take steps to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future.

In the meantime, the public debate over the incident and Portnoy’s response is likely to continue, fueled by social media and traditional news outlets. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and the need to challenge antisemitism and hate speech wherever it appears.
