Cowboys Prioritizing Quarterback Depth in Upcoming NFL Draft
Dallas, Texas: Stephen Jones, Executive Vice President of the Dallas Cowboys, has emphasized the importance of bolstering the team’s quarterback depth in the forthcoming NFL Draft. The Cowboys have experienced a string of setbacks at the position, leaving them vulnerable when star quarterback Dak Prescott has been sidelined.
Prescott, a crucial cog in the Cowboys’ success, has suffered two significant injuries in the past five seasons. These absences created a void that backup quarterbacks Cooper Rush, Trey Lance, and Andy Dalton were unable to adequately fill. When Prescott has been healthy, the Cowboys have proven their mettle, posting at least 12 wins from 2021 to 2023.
"One of our goals is to get a young quarterback in the draft," Jones asserted at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. "I don’t know where that’s going to be. That’s why we gave a (fourth-round pick) for Trey."
The Cowboys acquired Lance from the San Francisco 49ers before the 2023 season, but he has seen limited playing time. Rush, who joined the Cowboys in 2017, has primarily served as Prescott’s backup. He had a brief stint with the New York Giants in 2020.
The upcoming draft boasts a crop of talented quarterbacks familiar to college football enthusiasts. Shedeur Sanders and Cam Ward are projected to be selected within the top six picks of the draft. Jalen Milore, Kyle McCord, Jaxson Dart, Quinn Ewers, and Riley Leonard are among the players who could fall into the Cowboys’ range.
The Cowboys’ pursuit of a young quarterback stems from the critical role the position plays in their success. With Prescott’s injury history, it is imperative to have a reliable backup who can step in and maintain the team’s momentum.
