The analysis, conducted by BravoDeal.com, a website dedicated to providing deals and savings for shoppers, examined data from two of the leading food delivery platforms, DoorDash and Grubhub, across 20 major U.S. cities. The research focused on calculating the average delivery fee per order, providing a comprehensive overview of the cost landscape in different urban centers.
The findings revealed a strong presence of Texas cities among the top contenders for the cheapest delivery fees, solidifying the state’s reputation for affordability in this growing sector. In fact, four Texas cities secured positions within the top 10 overall, highlighting the state’s favorable environment for consumers seeking cost-effective food delivery options.
Fort Worth Leads the Way in DoorDash Affordability
Specifically, Fort Worth emerged as the city with the absolute lowest average DoorDash delivery fees, boasting an incredibly attractive rate of just 40 cents per order. This remarkably low fee makes Fort Worth an exceptionally appealing choice for DoorDash users looking to minimize their expenses while enjoying the convenience of having food delivered directly to their doorstep.
Dallas followed closely behind, securing the second position with an average DoorDash delivery fee of 47 cents. The proximity of these two Texas cities at the top of the list suggests a regional trend of competitive pricing and a commitment to providing affordable delivery options for consumers.
Houston also made a strong showing, ranking sixth with an average DoorDash delivery fee of 63 cents, further demonstrating the prevalence of affordable food delivery options within the Texas urban landscape.
San Antonio secured the eighth position with an average DoorDash delivery fee of 67 cents, adding to the impressive representation of Texas cities in the top 10. Austin rounded out the Texas contingent, ranking ninth with an average DoorDash delivery fee of 70 cents.
Austin Takes the Lead in Grubhub Affordability Among Texas Cities
While Fort Worth, Dallas, Houston and San Antonio excelled in DoorDash affordability, Austin stood out as the Texas city with the cheapest average Grubhub delivery fees. The capital city secured the second position overall, closely trailing behind Seattle, which held the top spot with an average Grubhub delivery fee of $3.14 per order. Austin’s average Grubhub delivery fee was only slightly higher, at $3.32, making it an extremely competitive and attractive option for Grubhub users in the Texas region.
Houston followed closely behind Austin, ranking third with an average Grubhub delivery fee of $3.38, once again highlighting the affordability of food delivery options in the Texas metropolis. Dallas also secured a spot in the top 10 for Grubhub affordability, rounding out the list with an average fee of $4.18 per order.
Jacksonville and San Francisco Face the Highest Delivery Fees
In contrast to the Texas cities with their remarkably low delivery fees, Jacksonville, Florida, and San Francisco, California, emerged as the cities with the highest average charges. Jacksonville had the highest average DoorDash delivery fee at $2.70, while San Francisco topped the list for Grubhub, with users paying a staggering average of $6.12 per order. A DoorDash spokesperson responded to the study’s findings, stating that the company "is always working hard to lower costs for consumers and make DoorDash even more affordable and accessible for everyone. Our approach to fees prioritizes fairness and transparency, with no hidden fees or surprises at checkout."
Grubhub also provided a statement, asserting that "We’re committed to keeping fees low, and in fact, we’ve had $0 delivery fees in several major markets since last year. It’s unclear when this data was pulled because the methodology wasn’t shared with us. We are upfront about our fees and clearly disclose them to customers during the checkout process." This lack of transparency regarding methodology raises questions about the data’s representativeness and the timeframe to which it pertains.
