Cam Ward Shines at Combine, Addresses Doubts and Solidifies Top Draft Prospect Status
Indianapolis witnessed a compelling display of confidence and maturity from quarterback Cam Ward this week at the NFL scouting combine. The former Miami Hurricane, and potential No. 1 overall pick, deftly navigated a barrage of questions from NFL coaches, scouts, executives, and media members, leaving a lasting impression that could further solidify his status as a top draft prospect.
While Ward fielded inquiries regarding his skill set, leadership qualities, and past decisions, his parents, Patrice and Calvin, observed attentively from the sidelines. Their presence underscored the significance of this pivotal moment in Ward’s career and provided a grounding force amidst the whirlwind of attention.
One of the primary topics addressed was Ward’s decision to sit out the second half of the Pop-Tarts Bowl last season. Despite setting a new Division I record for career touchdown passes (158) prior to halftime, Ward was held out for the remainder of the game, a decision that sparked some debate. When asked if NFL teams had expressed concerns regarding his choice, Ward dismissed the notion, stating, "No discussion at all. At the end of the day, it’s March. Bowl game’s in December. At some point, you’ve got to move on. I’ve never lived my life in the past, I don’t who would want to live their life in the past. I’ll take it on the chin, you know, I’ll just keep pushing every day." His direct and forward-looking response drew a smile from his mother, Patrice, who clearly appreciated his poise and conviction.
Ward’s performance at the combine extended beyond answering questions. He exuded a natural confidence and maturity that resonated with those in attendance. He articulated his willingness to adapt to different offensive schemes, emphasizing his commitment to winning. “I’m willing to do anything, you know, that it takes to win a football game, whether it’s being a gunslinger all day or if I have to hand the ball off a couple times,” Ward said. “At the end of the day, I know what type of player I am, (and) the teams should know what type of player they’re getting in me. And so, you know, I’m just going out there and trying to do my best for myself and my future teammates.”
His former teammates have consistently praised Ward’s leadership abilities and positive influence. Hurricanes receiver Jacolby George lauded Ward for transforming the program and uniting the team, stating, "Playing with Cam Ward was great. He came into the program, he changed it all, we all learned from him, and we just became one once he got into the facility. His personality was a big part of how we played our season and how we did so good. I feel like he’s the reason why we had that winning season, and he’s the reason we stuck together.”
Tight end Elijah Arroyo echoed George’s sentiments, describing Ward as "the ultimate guy, ultimate teammate." Arroyo emphasized Ward’s leadership qualities, saying, “He’s not afraid to hold people accountable. He wants to win, and he holds the team to a certain standard." These testimonials from former teammates highlight Ward’s ability to connect with others, inspire confidence, and foster a winning culture.
Ward’s journey to the NFL has been marked by perseverance and a unwavering belief in his abilities. His college career began at the University of the Incarnate Word, an FCS program, as it was the only school to offer him a scholarship. He then transferred to Washington State before ultimately landing at Miami. Each stop along the way provided Ward with valuable experiences and opportunities to hone his skills.
"At the end of the day, you never know where football will take you,” said Ward.
As he prepares for the next chapter of his career, Ward has already met with several teams in need of a franchise quarterback, including the Tennessee Titans, Cleveland Browns, New York Giants, Las Vegas Raiders, and New York Jets. Despite the pressure of potentially joining a struggling NFL operation, Ward remains focused on the positive aspects of each opportunity. He understands the importance of hard work and dedication, and he is prepared to embrace the challenges that lie ahead.
“It’s crazy to see how everything can change, so I’m not worried about no spotlight,” said Ward, who also played very well at Wazzu before the Pac-12 splintered. “At the end of the day, the camera’s gonna find you if you’re a franchise quarterback somewhere. So I just put my head down and work every day.”
Ward’s impressive performance in 2024 earned him recognition as the ACC’s Player of the Year and the Davey O’Brien Award as college football’s best quarterback. He led the country with 39 touchdown passes, showcasing his exceptional arm talent and playmaking abilities. While he possesses the physical attributes to succeed at the next level, Ward emphasizes the importance of his intangibles, such as mindset, preparation, and work ethic.
When asked about his best on-field trait, Ward responded with "winning from the pocket," highlighting his ability to make accurate throws and lead the offense from a traditional quarterbacking position. “If you can’t win in the pocket,” he said, “you’ll never be successful.”
He opted not to participate in the combine’s quarterback drills, further emphasizing his focus on the mental aspects of the game. He engaged thoughtfully with criticism, providing insightful responses that demonstrated his understanding of the nuances of the quarterback position. When questioned about his tendency to hold onto the ball for an extended period, Ward explained that it allows his receivers more time to get open, while also crediting his offensive line for providing him with the necessary protection.
Ward’s leadership style is characterized by accountability and a strong work ethic. He believes that NFL players should be self-motivated and that a quarterback’s primary responsibility is to lead by example. "Just holding people accountable," Ward said of his approach. "I’m not no rah-rah guy. At this point in your career in the NFL, you shouldn’t need somebody to motivate you every day, you have to be self-motivated. That’s the type of person I am, that’s the type of leader I am. Throughout college, I’ve grown to be more vocal. But at the end of the day, it’s all about leading by example," he continued.
He recognizes the significant responsibility that comes with being a franchise quarterback and is prepared to embrace the challenges and expectations that accompany the role. "The quarterback will always be the highest-paid player on the team, and he has to showcase that skill every Sunday and every day throughout the facility to his teammates. I just think I’ll be one of those guys in the long run, and I’m looking forward to it.”
As Cam Ward embarks on his NFL journey, he carries with him the support of his family, former teammates, and coaches. His performance at the scouting combine has further solidified his position as a top draft prospect, and he is poised to make a significant impact on the league. With his talent, leadership qualities, and unwavering determination, Ward has the potential to become a franchise quarterback and lead his new team to success, making his parents and his future fanbase proud. He carries with him the poise and confidence of a seasoned veteran, and he appears ready to take on the challenges of the NFL. His journey is only just beginning.
