Devarjaye "DJ" Daniel: A Young Cancer Warrior Honored by Trump, Inspiring Hope

Devarjaye "DJ" Daniel, a remarkable 13-year-old boy battling brain cancer, has captured the hearts of many, most recently receiving an honorary Secret Service agent badge from former President Donald Trump. DJ’s story is one of resilience, unwavering spirit, and a commitment to making a difference despite facing immense personal challenges. His journey, marked by numerous surgeries and relentless treatment, has become an inspiring testament to the power of hope and the importance of living each day to the fullest.

During a recent joint session of Congress, Trump publicly recognized DJ, acknowledging his courageous fight against cancer. The moment was met with a resounding ovation, as members of Congress rose to their feet in a display of admiration and support. DJ, visibly touched by the gesture, expressed his gratitude. "I am very thankful that Donald Trump invited us down here, and I was not expecting for a lot of people to be over there," he told Fox News Digital, reflecting on the overwhelming experience.

The recognition extended beyond the congressional address. The day after Trump’s speech, DJ was invited to visit the President in the Oval Office. The White House shared a heartwarming image on Instagram, capturing a special moment where "Special Agent Daniel gave the President a big hug." This personal interaction further solidified the bond between the young cancer warrior and the former president, highlighting the impact DJ’s story has had on individuals from all walks of life.

DJ’s battle with cancer began in September 2018 when he was diagnosed with high-grade ependymoma and anaplastic, a thyroid tumor. Doctors delivered a grim prognosis, estimating he had only five months to live. However, DJ defied expectations, exceeding the initial timeline by more than six years. As Trump noted in his speech, DJ’s resilience has been nothing short of extraordinary.

Ependymoma, a type of tumor that originates in the brain or spinal cord, affects the central nervous system, impacting vital bodily functions. The National Cancer Institute estimates that approximately 200 to 250 children in the United States are diagnosed with this type of tumor each year. DJ’s journey has been particularly challenging, as his cancer metastasized, relapsed, and returned multiple times. He has endured 13 brain surgeries, each altering his personality in some way, according to his father, Theodis Daniel.

Theodis has played an integral role in supporting DJ throughout his journey. He recognizes the toll that each surgery takes on his son’s personality and makes a conscious effort to adapt and understand the changes. "I have to [keep] learn[ing] his personality. So, what you see is what you get until we have another surgery," Theodis explained, highlighting the ongoing adjustments required to navigate DJ’s evolving condition.

Despite the physical and emotional challenges he faces, DJ has remained remarkably positive and determined to make a difference in the world. He has received honorary badges from over 900 agencies across the country, recognizing his unwavering spirit and dedication to serving others. DJ initially set a goal of collecting 100 badges, but he has far surpassed that number and has no intention of stopping. "Well, once I reach 1,000, I’m just going to keep on going until my gas tank runs out. That’s when God calls you home," DJ said, reflecting his unwavering commitment to his cause.

Eric Woodhouse, a local radio host at WNBZ, first encountered DJ’s story while working with a local New York police station. Woodhouse recognized DJ’s remarkable character and unwavering determination. "Devarjaye [DJ] is truly a remarkable young man who we all could learn a thing or two from. He’s looking at a less-than-ideal diagnosis in the face and not stopping," Woodhouse shared, emphasizing the inspiration DJ provides to those around him.

Theodis Daniel has instilled in his son the importance of resilience and personal growth. He taught DJ that adversity can be a catalyst for building integrity and character. "When you go through things and you overcome them, it builds integrity and it builds character. You become a better version of yourself," Theodis explained, highlighting the valuable lessons DJ has learned through his experiences. He expressed his immense pride in his son’s accomplishments and his appreciation for the recognition DJ received from Trump. "So, for me, a very nice job last night, very, very proud and just ecstatic," he said.

Trump also mentioned that DJ’s doctors believe his cancer likely stemmed from exposure to chemicals during his childhood. Theodis and DJ have connected with other children battling cancer at the Texas Children’s Hospital, sharing their experiences and providing support to one another. Theodis is also enthusiastic about the Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) movement, which aims to promote health and well-being.

Theodis has witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by children battling cancer and is deeply moved by their resilience and tenacity. "It just breaks your heart to see [what] these kids go through. But, you know, this spirit of resilience and tenacity, it’s overwhelming," he said, adding, "You got to stay supremely positive and stay prayed up and just do nice things for people and you’ll make it through, we promise you. Look at us."

Cancer remains the leading cause of death by disease among children in the U.S., highlighting the importance of research and support for families affected by this devastating illness. DJ’s dream of becoming a police officer has been fueled by the kindness and support he has received from law enforcement officers throughout his journey. "They helped us. So I became one. And I want to help other people," he said, expressing his desire to give back to the community. DJ also has a desire to assist the homeless population. "You [can] take them, get them clean and get them back to where they can work," he said, demonstrating his compassion and commitment to helping those in need.

DJ’s story serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of resilience, hope, and compassion. Despite facing immense personal challenges, he remains determined to make a positive impact on the world, inspiring others to embrace life to the fullest and to find strength in the face of adversity. His honorary Secret Service badge and the recognition he has received from prominent figures like Donald Trump are testaments to the profound impact he has had on individuals from all walks of life.
