Crackdown on Crime in Bordeaux: Police Launch Major Operation in St. Michel District and Victor Hugo Boulevard
On Monday, a large-scale police operation involving 75 officers was conducted in the St. Michel district and Victor Hugo Boulevard in Bordeaux from 2:30 PM to 4:30 PM. The unannounced operation was part of an initiative by the Minister of the Interior to increase the presence of law enforcement in public spaces, particularly in areas known for high crime rates.
The operation, coordinated by the Bordeaux National Support Center (PNSR) and the Identity Document Fraud Unit, targeted the area known for its prevalence of drug dealing points. The operation’s primary objectives were to deter crime, control individuals, and apprehend individuals in irregular situations.
The operation’s focus was on "theft, violence, public intoxication, and drug trafficking," according to the Gironde Prefecture. The St. Michel district and Victor Hugo Boulevard had also been under the surveillance of the Local Crime Treatment Group (GLTD), which includes law enforcement, the prefecture, and the public prosecutor’s office.
According to sources, the operation aimed to identify, control, and arrest individuals in irregular situations, based on requests from the Bordeaux Public Prosecutor. "Depending on the offense, arrests, administrative detentions, or orders to leave the territory (OQTF) could be issued," a source close to the case stated.
During the operation, approximately 150 individuals were checked by law enforcement. Fifteen individuals were arrested, and two were taken into custody for being in Bordeaux despite having an OQTF.
This operation is the third of its kind to be organized in downtown Bordeaux since the beginning of the year. Similar operations were previously conducted in the Capucins and Gare districts and Victor Hugo Boulevard, respectively.
A police source explained that the operation is part of an ongoing effort to enhance security in the area. "This responds to the need to secure this neighborhood," the source said. The Gironde Prefecture also indicated that "this type of large-scale operation will be carried out regularly in all priority areas of the metropolis and Bordeaux in particular, in an effort to strengthen security."
The operation reflects a commitment by authorities to address the challenges of crime and disorder in the St. Michel district and Victor Hugo Boulevard. By increasing police presence and targeting individuals involved in criminal activities, law enforcement aims to deter crime, improve public safety, and maintain order in the community.
