Boeing is facing a wrongful death lawsuit filed by the family of John Barnett, a former employee who died by suicide in March 2024. Barnett, a whistleblower who had raised serious concerns about the company’s safety standards and practices, took his own life after providing deposition testimony in a case related to his complaints. The lawsuit alleges that Boeing fostered a toxic work environment and retaliated against Barnett for speaking out, ultimately contributing to his mental health decline and eventual suicide.

The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in South Carolina, paints a picture of a company culture where prioritizing production and profits overshadowed safety concerns. Another instance included 21 calls in an 8 hour period, allegedly stating, "I’m going to push you until you break."

In an email written in February 2021, Barnett expressed the profound impact Boeing had on his life. He wrote about struggling to regain a sense of wholeness, lamenting the loss of his once positive outlook and love for his job and the company. "Boeing has absolutely destroyed my outlook on life," he wrote.

Adding to the tragic narrative, Barnett left a suicide note before his death, filled with anger and despair. He expressed his wish for those responsible for his suffering to be held accountable, specifically targeting Boeing and its leadership. His final words also highlighted his frustration with the existing system for whistleblower protection, deeming it "f—ed up."

Barnett’s concerns about Boeing’s practices were not limited to internal complaints. In January 2024, he publicly voiced his concerns about the company’s efforts to return the 737 Max 9 jets to service too quickly, following an incident where a door panel blew off mid-flight on an Alaska Airlines jet.

Barnett’s death and the subsequent lawsuit have cast a harsh light on Boeing’s culture and practices. The allegations of prioritizing profits over safety, retaliating against whistleblowers, and fostering a toxic work environment have raised serious questions about the company’s commitment to ethical conduct and the well-being of its employees.
