Iger, an alumnus of Ithaca College’s television-radio program, graduated in 1973 and has remained a staunch supporter of the institution throughout his illustrious career. His consistent engagement and philanthropic contributions have significantly impacted the college community.

The Ithaca College Board of Trustees, following faculty recommendations, confers honorary degrees upon individuals who exemplify the college’s core values and mission. These degrees serve as a symbol of recognition for exceptional contributions to their respective fields and society at large.

College President La Jerne Terry Cornish lauded Iger’s accomplishments and dedication in an official statement released on April 30. "Bob Iger is truly deserving of this honor," Cornish stated. "His contributions to Ithaca College, our students, and the community are deeply appreciated." President Cornish’s remarks highlight the profound impact Iger has had on the college’s academic environment and its commitment to fostering future generations of leaders.

Iger’s professional journey began shortly after his graduation from Ithaca College. He joined Cerrache Cable, a company owned by the late Anthony Cerracche Sr., a pioneering figure in Ithaca’s cable television industry and a prominent real estate developer. Initially, Iger’s responsibilities involved reporting weather and sports news for the company. This early experience provided him with invaluable exposure to the media landscape and laid the foundation for his subsequent career advancements.

He eventually transitioned to the ABC network, where he gained extensive experience in various facets of the television industry. This period of his career proved instrumental in developing his leadership skills and broadening his understanding of the media business. His roles at ABC allowed him to cultivate a deep knowledge of content creation, distribution, and management, which would later prove invaluable in his leadership roles at Disney.

Iger joined Disney’s senior management team in 1996 and has since held several pivotal positions, including the esteemed role of Chief Executive Officer, which he assumed in 2005. Under his stewardship, Disney experienced unprecedented growth and innovation, expanding its global reach and diversifying its entertainment portfolio.

After retiring from his position as CEO in 2021, Iger returned to the helm of The Walt Disney Company in November 2022. His return was prompted by the need for experienced leadership during a period of significant transformations within the company and the media industry at large. He has since spearheaded efforts to adapt Disney to the evolving media landscape, focusing on strategic initiatives to enhance the company’s streaming services, content creation capabilities, and overall operational efficiency.

Iger’s leadership has been widely recognized and celebrated through numerous accolades and honors. He has been inducted into both the Broadcasting and Cable Hall of Fame and the Television Academy Hall of Fame, cementing his status as a visionary leader in the media and entertainment industries.

Furthermore, Iger’s contributions to global culture and diplomacy have been acknowledged through international honors. He was recognized as an Honorary Knight Commander by Queen Elizabeth II in June 2024, signifying his profound impact on the entertainment landscape and his contributions to cultural exchange. Additionally, he was awarded the Chevalier de Legion d’Honneur by the French Republic in November of the same year, further highlighting his global influence and his commitment to fostering international collaborations.

Iger’s commitment to Ithaca College is further demonstrated through his philanthropic initiatives and enduring support for the institution. He established the Reginald Simmons ’75 Memorial Award, honoring the legacy of a fellow alumnus, and generously contributed $1 million to launch the Iger-Bay Endowed Scholarship, providing financial assistance to deserving students.

In addition to his financial contributions, Iger has actively engaged with the Ithaca College community through various roles and activities. He previously served as a commencement speaker, imparting wisdom and inspiration to graduating students. He has also served as a trustee, providing strategic guidance to the college’s leadership. In 2008, Iger received the Distinguished Alumni Award, a testament to his outstanding achievements and his lasting impact on Ithaca College.

His ongoing dedication to Ithaca College underscores his belief in the transformative power of education and his commitment to supporting the next generation of leaders.
