Blue Origin Announces All-Female Crewed Flight Amidst Layoff Concerns

Blue Origin, the space exploration company founded by Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, has revealed plans for its upcoming crewed spaceflight, slated for this spring. The mission, operating under the New Shepard program, marks a significant milestone for the company, representing its 11th crewed mission and 31st flight overall. This particular flight carries historical weight as it is poised to be the first all-female spaceflight since Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova’s solo journey into space in 1963.

The crew selection process was spearheaded by Lauren Sánchez, journalist and fiancée of Jeff Bezos, who will also be among the passengers on this groundbreaking mission. The team comprises a diverse group of accomplished women, including world-renowned pop icon Katy Perry, esteemed television personality Gayle King, dedicated scientist and activist Amanda Nguyen, accomplished entrepreneur and aerospace engineer Aisha Bowe, and talented director Kerianne Flynn.

The announcement of this all-female spaceflight comes at a time of internal restructuring and public scrutiny for Blue Origin. Just weeks prior to the mission’s unveiling, reports surfaced regarding significant layoffs within the company, with an estimated 10% of the workforce being affected.

In an email to employees, CEO Dave Limp attributed the layoffs to unsustainable growth, emphasizing the necessity for a strategic refocus on production and operational efficiency. The decision to reduce staff reflects the challenges faced by rapidly expanding companies as they navigate the complexities of scaling their operations while maintaining financial stability.

Despite the ongoing restructuring efforts, Blue Origin remains committed to its vision of making space accessible to a wider audience. The New Shepard program, specifically designed for suborbital spaceflights, aims to provide individuals with a brief but transformative experience of weightlessness and a unique perspective on our planet.

As of February 28, 2025, Blue Origin has successfully launched 52 individuals into suborbital space aboard its New Shepard rocket across 10 human spaceflight missions. The company has diligently tracked its progress, compiling a comprehensive list of individuals who have participated in these journeys.

Past New Shepard Missions:

  • NS-16 (July 20, 2021) – First Crewed Flight: This inaugural crewed flight marked a pivotal moment for Blue Origin and the commercial spaceflight industry. It signified the culmination of years of research, development, and testing, demonstrating the viability of the New Shepard system for human space travel.
  • NS-18 (October 13, 2021): Building upon the success of the first crewed flight, NS-18 continued to refine and validate the New Shepard system’s operational capabilities.
  • NS-19 (December 11, 2021): NS-19 expanded the scope of the New Shepard program, further demonstrating its reliability and versatility.
  • NS-20 (March 31, 2022): This mission maintained the momentum of Blue Origin’s crewed spaceflights, providing valuable data and insights for future endeavors.
  • NS-21 (June 4, 2022): NS-21 continued to showcase the potential of the New Shepard program for both tourism and scientific research.
  • NS-22 (August 4, 2022): NS-22 marked another successful mission, solidifying Blue Origin’s position in the commercial spaceflight market.
  • NS-25 (May 19, 2024) – First Flight After 2022 Grounding: Following a period of grounding, NS-25 represented a significant milestone for Blue Origin, demonstrating the company’s commitment to safety and continuous improvement.
  • NS-26 (August 29, 2024): This mission further validated the New Shepard system’s enhanced capabilities and reliability.
  • NS-28 (November 22, 2024): NS-28 contributed to the growing body of knowledge about human spaceflight and the potential for future exploration.
  • NS-30 (February 25, 2025): The most recent mission, NS-30, reinforced Blue Origin’s commitment to providing safe and accessible space travel opportunities.

The upcoming all-female spaceflight represents a significant step forward in promoting diversity and inclusion within the space industry. By selecting a crew of accomplished women from various backgrounds, Blue Origin is inspiring future generations and demonstrating that space exploration is open to everyone.

The inclusion of Katy Perry, a global music icon, adds a unique dimension to the mission, potentially reaching a wider audience and sparking greater interest in space travel. Similarly, the presence of Gayle King, a respected journalist and television host, will provide valuable insights and perspectives on the experience of spaceflight.

Amanda Nguyen, a scientist and activist, brings a passion for social justice and a commitment to using science for the betterment of humanity. Aisha Bowe, an entrepreneur and aerospace engineer, exemplifies the power of innovation and the potential for women to excel in STEM fields. Kerianne Flynn, a talented director, will undoubtedly capture the essence of the mission and share the story with the world.

While the layoffs at Blue Origin raise concerns about the company’s financial stability and long-term sustainability, the upcoming all-female spaceflight serves as a reminder of the company’s ambitious goals and its commitment to pushing the boundaries of space exploration.

The mission’s success will depend not only on the technical aspects of the flight but also on Blue Origin’s ability to effectively manage its internal challenges and maintain public trust. As the company navigates this critical period, its actions will be closely scrutinized by the space industry and the wider world.
