Chilling Start to the Week for Brandenburg Amidst Near-Freezing Temperatures
Brandenburg experienced a bone-chilling start to the week, with temperatures plummeting to around minus 16 degrees Celsius in Coschen (Oder-Spree district) and Manschnow (Märkisch-Oderland district), according to a spokesperson for the German Weather Service (DWD). The frosty conditions are expected to persist in the coming days, with localized temperatures reaching minus 17 degrees Celsius.
Minimal Weather-Related Incidents
Despite the freezing temperatures, Brandenburg has seen a remarkably low number of weather-related accidents. Police spokesperson confirmed that most drivers have adjusted their driving to the frigid conditions, resulting in only a few minor incidents.
In stark contrast, last week’s heavy snowfall and below-zero temperatures led to a surge in road accidents across Brandenburg. Over 160 weather-related collisions were recorded, including seven bus accidents in Potsdam alone.
Ice Skating: Proceed with Caution
With the arrival of freezing temperatures, the prospect of ice skating on Brandenburg’s waterways has emerged. However, the German Life Saving Society (DLRG) strongly advises against venturing onto frozen surfaces. While some bodies of water may have formed a seemingly stable ice crust, most are still susceptible to breaking.
The DLRG recommends avoiding ice surfaces with a thickness of less than 15 centimeters. Even with the forecasted overnight sub-zero temperatures, most water bodies are unlikely to reach this threshold. The fluctuating daytime temperatures above freezing hinder the formation of a sufficiently thick and reliable ice cover.
Support for the Homeless during Chilling Nights
The frigid nights pose significant challenges for homeless individuals. The Cottbus Stadtmission’s "Kältehilfe" facility provides a lifeline for up to 55 people daily, offering warm and cold meals, a respite from the cold, and opportunities for interaction. The facility has seen a consistent flow of visitors since opening in November and will continue to operate until March.
Cottbus also offers a "Night Shelter" with 12 beds for overnight accommodation. While the beds are consistently occupied, they have not yet reached capacity. The robust collaboration between city officials, street workers, and aid organizations has been instrumental in preventing any cold-related deaths in recent winters.
Autobahn Maintenance Despite the Cold
Despite the cold, motorway maintenance teams have been able to carry out their duties effectively. The wintery conditions have led to an increase in road damage and the need for frequent sanding operations. However, the extent of these activities is comparable to previous years, according to a spokesperson for the Autobahn GmbH. The winter service season on the motorways is scheduled to run until the end of March.
