Golden Bear for Tilda Swinton

The prestigious festival will commence with the awarding of the Golden Bear for Lifetime Achievement to the esteemed Oscar-winning actress Tilda Swinton, who will grace the opening gala on February 16th. The heartfelt tribute to her remarkable career will be delivered by the acclaimed Oscar-nominated director Edward Berger ("Conclave").

World Premiere: "Das Licht" Opens the Festival

The festivities will officially launch with the world premiere of renowned German director Tom Tykwer’s latest cinematic endeavor, "Das Licht." This captivating film, featuring the exceptional Lars Eidinger and Nicolette Krebitz in pivotal roles, explores the complexities of a fractured Berlin family. The opening gala, hosted by the eloquent Désirée Nosbusch, will be streamlined this year for a more focused and engaging experience.

International Jury Introduces Diverse Perspectives

The Berlinale’s International Jury will make its highly anticipated appearance on February 17th, led by the distinguished American filmmaker Todd Haynes ("Carol"). Joining Haynes in this esteemed panel is the acclaimed German director Maria Schrader ("She Said"), who will contribute her expertise in selecting the coveted Berlinale Bears awarded in the competition. This year, 19 remarkable films will vie for the coveted Golden Bear, promising an array of cinematic excellence.

For the first time, the Berlinale will be led by an American, Ms. Tricia Tuttle. In her recent interview with Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg (rbb), she expressed her aspirations for the festival: "I want to have a great festival. I want there to be no drama and for everyone to be talking about the films." Recognizing the controversies that plagued the 2024 closing gala, Tuttle aims to transform the Berlinale into a sanctuary for open and nuanced dialogue. "The more the debate radicalizes, the more urgently we need a place for differentiated conversation," she emphasized.

Culture Minister Highlights Cinema’s Power

Germany’s Minister of State for Culture, Claudia Roth (Greens), remarked during the opening ceremony: "In these challenging times, the power of cinema can offer us much: new perspectives and inspirations, critical reflections, and also plenty of fodder for dreams." She praised the Berlinale’s dedication to showcasing a diverse and thought-provoking program.

Celebrity Appearances Illuminate the Red Carpet

The Berlinale will welcome a stellar lineup of Hollywood celebrities this year. Oscar-nominated actor Timothée Chalamet (29, "Dune") will present his Bob Dylan biopic, "Like A Complete Unknown," on February 17th. Robert Pattinson will join the festivities on February 18th to unveil his highly anticipated science-fiction film, "Mickey 17." Other notable stars expected to grace the red carpet include Jessica Chastain, Marion Cotillard, Margaret Qualley, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Ethan Hawke.

Closing Gala and Reflective Retrospective

The Berlinale will conclude on February 23rd with a grand closing gala, bringing the 10-day cinematic immersion to a close. The festival’s comprehensive program will feature an array of films from around the globe, including documentaries, experimental works, and narrative features.
