Amphibian Migrations Underway in Rheinland-Pfalz: Kröten, Molches Seek Spawning Grounds

Amphibian Migration Commences in Rheinland-Pfalz: Frogs and Newts Stir from Winter Slumber

As the first signs of spring grace the landscape of Rheinland-Pfalz, a remarkable natural phenomenon unfolds: the annual migration of amphibians. The Naturschutzbund (NABU) Rheinland-Pfalz reports that earthworms, in particular, are already embarking on their arduous journey from their winter hibernation sites to their spawning grounds. Scattered sightings of newts have also been recorded.

The nocturnal temperatures hovering above six degrees Celsius in recent days have awakened many amphibians from their winter dormancy. With renewed vigor, they now embark on journeys spanning several kilometers to return to the waters where they were born.

"The migration is highly dependent on the weather," explains Naturschutzreferentin Wiebke Pastigh. "If colder temperatures return in the coming days, the toads will likely pause their journey."

In the event of a sudden drop in temperature, amphibians will retreat to sheltered spots and remain dormant until conditions improve. They are well-adapted to such weather fluctuations. However, this year’s toad migrations in Rheinland-Pfalz have begun unusually early.

"Increasingly mild winters over the past few years have led to earlier and earlier toad migrations," notes Pastigh. "This can have negative consequences."

Prematurely warm temperatures can deplete the energy reserves of toads, impairing their reproductive success and, consequently, leading to declining populations.

Protecting Amphibians on the Move

As each year, conservationists prepare for the annual amphibian migration by erecting fences along roads. Without these safeguards, toads would fall victim to traffic in alarming numbers. In many areas of Rheinland-Pfalz, the fences are already in place. In the neighboring state of Saarland, where the migration has yet to begin, protective barriers are also being erected.

Earth Toads: A Species in Focus

Among the amphibian species making the trek, earth toads (Bufo bufo) are particularly prevalent in Rheinland-Pfalz. These nocturnal creatures emerge from their hibernation shelters as early as dusk and embark on their journey, often traveling long distances to reach their spawning grounds.

Earth toads are resilient and adaptable but face a range of challenges, including habitat loss, pollution, and climate change. The early onset of migration due to milder winters poses an additional threat, as it can disrupt their reproductive cycle.

Conservation Measures: A Collaborative Effort

Protecting amphibians during their migration requires collaboration between various stakeholders. Conservation organizations, government agencies, and volunteers work tirelessly to ensure the safe passage of these vital species.

  • Fence Erection and Monitoring: The timely installation and regular inspection of fences are crucial to preventing toad fatalities on roads.
  • Public Awareness Campaign: Educating the public about the importance of amphibian conservation and the need for caution during the migration period is essential.
  • Habitat Protection and Enhancement: Preserving and restoring amphibian habitats, including breeding ponds and surrounding areas, provides vital support for these species throughout their life cycle.

By implementing such measures, we can contribute to the conservation of amphibians and ensure the continuation of their remarkable annual migration in Rheinland-Pfalz and beyond.
