Edan Alexander: The Last American Hostage in Gaza
Background
Over 16 months of conflict between Israel and Hamas have led to the detention of five American citizens in Gaza. Tragically, only one of those hostages remains alive: Edan Alexander, an Israeli-American from Tenafly, New Jersey.
Edan Alexander’s Life
Born in Israel, Edan spent most of his childhood in the United States. Growing up in New Jersey, he attended Tenafly High School, participated in swimming, and cheered for the New York Knicks. However, he maintained strong ties to his Israeli family and visited frequently, speaking Hebrew at home.
After graduating high school, Edan made the unconventional decision to join the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) instead of pursuing higher education. He served in the Golani Brigade, an infantry unit known for its elite status.
Captivity
On October 7, 2023, Alexander was patrolling near Gaza when Hamas launched a series of attacks on Israel. During these attacks, Edan was captured and became one of 251 hostages taken by Hamas. The fighting resulted in the deaths of 1,200 Israelis.
Family’s Agony
Edan’s mother, Yael Alexander, was visiting Israel at the time of his capture. She recounted the fateful day in an interview with the American Jewish Committee (AJC). Initially unaware of her son’s fate, she spent days searching for him, visiting hospitals and making calls. Finally, the IDF confirmed that Edan had been taken hostage.
Propaganda Video
Over a year later, on November 30, 2024, Hamas released a video showing Edan speaking in Hebrew and Arabic. Like other hostages coerced into making such videos, Edan delivered messages about Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and then-President-elect Donald Trump.
Efforts for His Release
Lawmakers in Israel and the United States have tirelessly advocated for Alexander’s release. Congressman Josh Gottheimer, who represents Edan’s constituents in New Jersey, has emphasized the unimaginable pain his family has endured. New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy has also urged Edan’s immediate return to his loved ones.
Ongoing Negotiations
Despite these efforts, Edan was not included in the initial phase of the ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas. However, negotiations for the second phase are ongoing, and there is hope that Alexander’s release may be secured.
Deceased Hostages
In addition to Edan Alexander, Hamas is holding the bodies of four other American hostages who were killed during the conflict. Six more hostages were released on Saturday, January 14, 2025, as part of an exchange for over 600 Palestinian prisoners.
Call for Resolution
Edan Alexander’s captivity has captured the attention of the world and highlighted the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza. His family and supporters continue to appeal to Hamas to release him and to the international community to facilitate his safe return. The fate of the four deceased American hostages also remains an urgent concern.
