Navigating the Allergy Assault: Expert Advice for Surviving Allergy Season

Allergy season is here, and experts are warning that this year could bring some of the most intense allergy symptoms yet. Changes in climate patterns are allowing plants and trees to thrive in new regions, leading to higher pollen counts and the emergence of novel allergens. This means even those who haven’t previously experienced allergy symptoms could find themselves battling a barrage of sneezes, sniffles, and itchy eyes.

The American Lung Association highlights that shifting temperature and rainfall patterns are facilitating plant growth in previously uninhabitable areas. This expansion of plant life directly translates to a greater release of pollen into the atmosphere, triggering allergic reactions in susceptible individuals.

The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) recently published its annual allergy report, which pinpoints the most challenging cities for allergy sufferers. The report meticulously analyzes tree, grass, and weed pollen counts throughout the year. It also considers factors like the availability of over-the-counter allergy medications and access to board-certified allergists and immunologists, painting a comprehensive picture of the allergy landscape across the nation.

According to the AAFA’s 2025 report, Wichita, Kansas, has been named the top allergy capital for the third consecutive year. This dubious distinction is primarily attributed to the city’s elevated tree and grass pollen levels, which consistently exceed the national average.

The introduction of new pollen types and the overall surge in pollen quantities can trigger allergic responses in individuals who were previously unaffected. Even those who have never experienced allergies before may find themselves grappling with symptoms this season.

To combat the relentless onslaught of allergens, Dr. Purvi Parikh, an infectious disease allergy and immunology specialist at NYU Langone, shared valuable insights with Fox News Digital on effective strategies to manage allergies as the seasons change.

Dr. Parikh emphasizes the importance of proactive medication use for those with seasonal allergies. She recommends starting allergy medications early in the season to preemptively control symptoms. "One of the most important things that we recommend is to use a 24-hour antihistamine, because they’re longer-acting and can really help control symptoms," she explained.

In addition to antihistamines, Dr. Parikh suggests utilizing eye drops and antihistamine nasal sprays to alleviate specific symptoms like itchy eyes and nasal congestion. These targeted treatments can provide localized relief, complementing the broader effects of antihistamines.

However, Dr. Parikh cautions that over-the-counter medications may not be sufficient for everyone. "The other important thing to remember with over-the-counter medications is that if you’re having breathing issues, like coughing, wheezing or chest tightness, those are all signs that you might have asthma," she warned. In such cases, seeking professional medical advice is crucial to ensure appropriate diagnosis and treatment.

Beyond medication, Dr. Parikh recommends implementing lifestyle modifications to minimize allergen exposure. After spending time outdoors, she advises changing clothes and showering to wash away any lingering pollen. This simple step can significantly reduce the amount of pollen that comes into contact with your skin and respiratory system.

Washing bedsheets weekly in warm water is another effective strategy to limit allergen exposure, according to experts. By removing accumulated pollen and dust mites from your bedding, you can create a more allergen-free sleeping environment.

Dr. Parikh also highlights the importance of timing when it comes to outdoor activities. "As the pollen count is highest in the mornings, it’s best to stay indoors early in the day," she said. "Keep windows closed early in the morning for the same reason." The pollen count typically peaks again in the late afternoon and early evening, so limiting outdoor exposure during these times can further minimize your allergy symptoms.

Different plants and trees release pollen at different times, resulting in variations in allergy symptoms based on geographic location, according to the AAFA. Trees generally produce the most pollen from February through April. However, in some southern states, tree pollen production can begin as early as December or January and peak multiple times throughout the year.

While allergy symptoms often manifest as stuffy noses and dry eyes, Dr. Parikh cautions that these symptoms can also be indicative of other conditions. "Colds and viruses and allergies can have a lot of identical symptoms," she told Fox News Digital. "Allergies tend to last longer … so if you feel like you’re sick for the whole month of April and May … it may be more likely that it’s allergies."

Dr. Parikh advises anyone unsure whether their symptoms are due to allergies or illness to consult a doctor for proper diagnosis and treatment.

By understanding the factors driving allergy season and implementing these expert-backed strategies, individuals can effectively manage their symptoms and enjoy a more comfortable spring and summer. Proactive medication use, lifestyle modifications, and seeking professional medical advice when necessary are all essential components of a comprehensive allergy management plan. Stay informed, stay prepared, and take control of your allergy symptoms to make the most of the season.
