Airport Disruptions Due to Warning Strikes in Cologne and Düsseldorf

Strike Notice

On Sunday evening and Monday morning, Cologne and Düsseldorf airports will experience operational hurdles as part of a warning strike by the ver.di union. This industrial action involves public service employees at both transportation hubs. Significant impact on passenger flights is anticipated, according to ver.di.

Cologne

In Cologne, the 24-hour work stoppage will commence late Sunday evening. The strike will primarily affect baggage handling, check-in counter operations, and aircraft fueling.

Düsseldorf

In Düsseldorf, the warning strike will commence early Monday morning. Targeted employees include those responsible for baggage handling, check-in procedures, and aircraft water supply. Minimal flight activity is expected on Monday, as per a ver.di spokesperson. Security checks will remain unaffected.

Strike Causes

The strike stems from an ongoing wage dispute involving public service employees nationwide. ver.di and the Beamtenbund dbb are negotiating with the federal government and municipalities over compensation and working conditions for over 2.5 million workers. These individuals are employed not only in administrative roles but also in childcare, education, public transportation, waste management, and airports. Firefighters and federal police officers are also included.

Negotiation Impasse

A second round of wage negotiations in Potsdam on Tuesday concluded without a resolution. ver.di and the Beamtenbund subsequently declared their intention to expand labor actions prior to upcoming negotiations. The third round of talks is scheduled for March 14.

Union Demands

ver.di is seeking an 8% wage increase, with a minimum increase of €350 per month. Additional demands include higher wage supplements for particularly demanding roles.

Recent Strike Actions

This week, ver.di orchestrated a strike involving over 50,000 employees of municipal train and bus operators in Hessen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Baden-Württemberg, Lower Saxony, Rhineland-Palatinate, and Bremen.
