Natural Language Processing: Promises and Pitfalls

Natural language processing (NLP) has revolutionized our interaction with technology, allowing us to communicate with machines in a human-like manner. Google’s artificial intelligence (AI) is a prime example of this, boasting impressive capabilities such as language translation, speech recognition, and text summarization. However, as we delve deeper into the realm of NLP, it becomes apparent that even the most advanced AI systems are not immune to imperfections.

Initial Excitement and Subsequent Disillusionment

Upon requesting Google’s AI to locate a nearby Vietnamese restaurant, ascertain the price of Phở (a traditional Vietnamese noodle soup), and invite a friend via SMS to join for dinner that evening at 7:30 PM, the initial response was promising. The AI seemingly executed all tasks with proficiency, providing the restaurant’s name (Ha Noi), the price of Phở (12.50 euros), and sending the invitation to the specified contact.

However, upon closer examination, glaring discrepancies emerged. The restaurant’s actual location was a significant 30-minute drive away, despite the existence of viable alternatives within a mere 10-minute walking distance. Additionally, the price of Phở, according to the restaurant’s current menu on Google Maps, was a full euro higher than the AI had stated.

Hallucination or Inflation?

The question arises: were these discrepancies instances of hallucination by the AI or simply a reflection of real-world inflation? Hallucination, in the context of AI, refers to the generation of novel information that is not supported by the input data. In this case, the AI’s response suggests that it may have fabricated the location and price of the restaurant, potentially influenced by outdated or incomplete information.

Alternatively, it is possible that the price of Phở had indeed increased by one euro since the most recent update to Google Maps. While this would not constitute hallucination, it highlights the limitations of AI systems that rely on static data sources. They lack the ability to account for real-time changes, leading to potential inaccuracies in their responses.

The Importance of Context and Verification

These imperfections underscore the importance of context and verification when interacting with AI systems. While NLP has made significant strides, it is crucial to remember that AI responses should not be taken at face value. When making important decisions or relying on information provided by AI, it is imperative to critically evaluate its accuracy and relevance.

In the case of restaurant recommendations, relying solely on the AI’s response could have led to an unsatisfactory dining experience, both in terms of convenience and cost. By verifying the location and price independently, the user could ensure that their plans aligned with their expectations.

Conclusion

NLP has undoubtedly transformed our technological landscape, empowering us with unprecedented capabilities. However, as with any technology, it has its limitations. Hallucination and reliance on static data sources can lead to inaccuracies and misinterpretations.

To harness the full potential of NLP and mitigate its shortcomings, it is essential to approach AI responses with a cautious and discerning mind. By demanding context, verifying information, and exercising critical thinking, we can leverage the benefits of NLP while minimizing its pitfalls.
