AfD’s Alliance with Hungary’s Right-Wing Government: A Shift in European Politics

A Political Alliance Emerges: AfD and Hungarian Right-Wing Government Join Forces

The relationship between Germany’s far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) and Hungary’s right-wing government has taken a significant turn, with both parties signaling a willingness to collaborate.

A Visit to Budapest: AfD Expresses Admiration

AfD leader Alice Weidel visited Budapest, where she praised Hungary in glowing terms. She hailed the country as a "bulwark against illegal migration" and labeled it a role model. During a joint press conference with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, Weidel stated, "Hungary is the stronghold against illegal migration."

The appearance resembled a state visit, with the German and Hungarian flags prominently displayed behind Weidel and Orban. Orban acknowledged this, stating, "The AfD is not the party whose leadership is usually received by prime ministers in every European country, but the time has come to change that." With a smile, he added, "This is a ‘piquancy.’"

AfD’s Long-Standing Support for Orban

For years, the AfD has openly expressed its affinity for Orban’s right-wing, EU-critical policies. Weidel spoke of Hungary as a symbol of reason, sovereignty, independence, and freedom of expression. She pledged that "we will follow the path of Hungary, our great role model," in the event that the AfD participates in a German government.

Political Landscape in Germany: AfD’s Electoral Prospects

In the polls for Germany’s federal election on February 23, the AfD currently stands in second place behind the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) with 20-22%. However, it has no chance of participation in the government, as no other party is willing to form a coalition with it.

Alignment on EU Policies: Anti-Brussels Sentiment

Weidel criticized Germany’s energy and migration policies and reiterated the AfD’s position of reducing the powers of the European Union. This stance resonates with Orban, who has repeatedly clashed with the EU Commission over economic issues, migration, and Russia policy. He has frequently attempted to block EU decisions requiring unanimity among all member states, including sanctions against Russia and aid for Ukraine.

Orban’s Shift in Stance: Deepening Relations with AfD

Orban announced his intention to intensify his previously "cautious" official relationship with the AfD. He explained his previous distance by emphasizing the vital importance of good relations with every German government, regardless of its political orientation. However, he added, "But now everything is changing," because "it is quite obvious that the AfD belongs to the future," citing the party’s poll numbers.

International Ambitions: Uniting Right-Wing Forces

The AfD is not currently part of the European Parliament’s right-wing Patriots and Conservatives (ECR) group, which was founded by Orban. However, Hungary’s Prime Minister aims to unite right-wing and far-right forces internationally. Critics accuse him of seeking to undermine the EU’s common values and rule of law principles.

A Meeting of Minds: Weidel and Orban’s Discussion

Weidel and Orban met for talks at Orban’s official residence, the former Carmelite monastery on Buda Castle. Reportedly, the two leaders also shared a dinner the evening before. "I am delighted that President Weidel accepted my invitation and visited us in Budapest," Orban said. However, a week earlier, the prime minister had told the "Neue Zürcher Zeitung" that Weidel had initiated the meeting.
