Harvey Weinstein Responds to Children’s Mention in Adrien Brody’s Oscar Speech
The specter of Harvey Weinstein, the disgraced movie mogul, loomed over the Academy Awards this year, not through his presence, but through the mention of his children during Adrien Brody’s acceptance speech for Best Actor. Brody, who is currently in a relationship with Weinstein’s ex-wife, Georgina Chapman, acknowledged her and her children with Weinstein, India and Dashiell, in his address, prompting a reaction from the incarcerated Weinstein.
During his acceptance speech, which honored his role in "The Brutalist," Brody expressed gratitude towards Chapman, stating that she had "not only reinvigorated my own self-worth, but my sense of value and my values." He further extended his appreciation to her children, India and Dashiell, saying, "I know this has been a rollercoaster, but thank you for accepting me into your life, and Popsys coming home a winner."
Weinstein, who was married to Chapman from 2007 to 2021, shares two children with her: India, currently 14 years old, and Dashiell, 11. Chapman initiated divorce proceedings in October 2017 following a cascade of sexual abuse allegations against Weinstein. At the time, she issued a statement expressing her heartbreak for the women who had suffered due to his actions, stating, "My heart breaks for all the women who have suffered tremendous pain because of these unforgivable actions. I have chosen to leave my husband."
In response to Brody’s speech, a representative for Weinstein conveyed his sentiments to USA TODAY, stating, "Harvey is very happy for Georgina and grateful that his children are being cared for (and) loved as they deserve to be." Weinstein also has three children from his previous marriage to Eve Chilton.
Brody’s relationship with Chapman, a fashion designer whose label Marchesa was a prominent presence on the red carpets during Weinstein’s reign in Hollywood, began in 2020.
Prior to his fall from grace, Weinstein was a significant figure at the Academy Awards, with his name frequently invoked during acceptance speeches. However, he is currently incarcerated, serving time after being found guilty of rape in Los Angeles in 2022. Separately, Weinstein’s rape conviction in New York was overturned in 2024, adding another layer of complexity to his legal battles.
Beyond the mention of Weinstein’s children, Brody’s acceptance speech made headlines for its remarkable length. Clocking in at 5 minutes and 37 seconds, it surpassed the previous record for the longest Oscar acceptance speech, held by Greer Garson, who spoke for 5 minutes and 30 seconds after winning Best Actress in 1943. Guinness World Records confirmed Brody’s speech as the new record holder.
The evening also saw Brody recreate a memorable moment from his past. On the red carpet, he shared a kiss with Halle Berry, echoing his spontaneous kiss with her after winning the Best Actor Oscar for "The Pianist" in 2003. Chapman, in an interview with Extra, playfully responded to the moment, saying, "How can you deny a man a kiss with Halle Berry?"
The inclusion of Weinstein’s children in Brody’s speech sparked a range of reactions. Some viewed it as a heartfelt gesture of inclusion and acceptance towards the children who have undoubtedly been affected by their father’s actions and the ensuing media storm. Others found it inappropriate, arguing that it brought Weinstein’s name and legacy back into the spotlight during an event that should focus on celebrating artistic achievements.
The situation highlights the complex web of relationships and emotions surrounding Weinstein’s downfall. While he remains a controversial figure, his children are innocent parties who deserve to be acknowledged and cared for. Brody’s decision to include them in his speech underscores the importance of family bonds, even in the face of challenging circumstances.
The incident also serves as a reminder of the lasting impact of Weinstein’s actions on the lives of those around him, including his ex-wife, his children, and his associates. While he is serving time for his crimes, the consequences of his behavior continue to reverberate through the industry and beyond. The Academy Awards, traditionally a celebration of cinematic excellence, became a stage for a brief but poignant reminder of the human cost of power abuse and the enduring power of family.
