Renowned Historian Thomas Großbölting Dies in Tragic Train Accident

Life and Legacy
Born in 1967, Großbölting embarked on an illustrious academic career. He held the esteemed position of Director at the Research Center for Contemporary History in Hamburg since 2020 and concurrently served as Professor of Modern/Contemporary History and German History at the University of Hamburg.

Tragic Demise
Großbölting’s life was tragically cut short by a railway accident on February 14th, 2023. An express train carrying 291 passengers collided with a truck at a level crossing in the Rönneburg district of Hamburg. The force of the impact left him with severe injuries that proved fatal despite immediate medical attention.
In addition to Großbölting’s untimely demise, the accident resulted in 25 injuries among the passengers. Six individuals sustained moderate injuries, while 19 escaped with minor physical ailments.
