Traffic Disruptions Expected in Seine-Saint-Denis Due to Bridge Waterproofing and Tram Extension Project

Motorists traveling through Seine-Saint-Denis in the coming days should be aware of significant traffic disruptions due to essential bridge waterproofing work and the ongoing construction of the T1 tramway extension. These projects will necessitate the closure of portions of the A3 and A86 highways during specific nights, impacting travel routes and potentially causing delays.

The bridge waterproofing activities, scheduled to take place in Noisy-le-Sec, will lead to the complete closure of sections of both the A3 and A86 during three separate nights. These closures will occur between the hours of 8:00 PM and 1:00 PM the following day, significantly affecting overnight and early morning traffic. The affected dates are:

  • Friday, May 2nd, to Saturday, May 3rd
  • Saturday, May 3rd, to Sunday, May 4th
  • Saturday, May 10th, to Sunday, May 11th

During the first two nights, encompassing the periods from May 2nd to May 3rd and May 3rd to May 4th, the A3 highway will be entirely closed in the Paris-province direction between the Porte de Bagnolet and Bondy exits. This closure represents a major disruption for commuters and long-distance travelers heading east and northeast from Paris.

To mitigate the impact of this closure, the Direction des Routes d’Île-de-France (DiRIF), the regional road authority, has recommended a detour route for those aiming to reach the A3 in Aulnay-sous-Bois from the Porte de Bagnolet. This detour involves utilizing the Boulevard Périphérique extérieur (outer ring road) and then taking the exit towards the A1 highway in the direction of Lille and the Roissy-Charles-de-Gaulle airport. Motorists can then rejoin the A3 further along the route. This detour is likely to add significant time to journeys, particularly during peak hours, and drivers should factor this into their travel plans.

For motorists traveling from the A4 and the A86 highways near Saint-Maurice in Val-de-Marne, an alternative detour route is available. These drivers can use the A4 in the direction of Porte de Bercy, then join the Boulevard Périphérique extérieur, and subsequently follow the same diversion route towards the A1, as detailed above. This option provides a viable alternative for those approaching from the southeast and seeking to avoid the A3 closure.

The closures are directly linked to the ambitious and extensive construction project aimed at extending the T1 tramway line. As part of this project, a new bridge is being built over the A86 highway between Fontenay-sous-Bois, Rosny-sous-Bois, and Montreuil, located to the east of Paris. This bridge is a crucial component of the tramway extension and will eventually enable the T1 trams to cross the highway and reach their new terminus in Val-de-Fontenay, situated in the Val-de-Marne department. The completion and commissioning of this tramway extension are currently anticipated around mid-2030.

The tramway extension project has already resulted in significant traffic alterations in the area. Since February, exit 18 of the A86 intérieur (inner ring road) has been closed, and this closure is expected to remain in effect for a period of 18 months. This extended closure further complicates traffic flow in the region and necessitates careful planning for drivers using this section of the highway.

Looking ahead, the construction timeline indicates that from August 2025, the construction crews will begin the assembly of the bridge deck, which is the horizontal structure upon which the tramway cars will travel. Following the assembly, the bridge deck will be installed over the existing highway lanes, a complex and potentially disruptive operation that will require meticulous planning and execution. The installation process is likely to involve further temporary road closures and diversions, impacting traffic flow in the area once again.

The combination of the bridge waterproofing activities and the ongoing tramway extension project creates a complex traffic situation in Seine-Saint-Denis. The temporary closures of the A3 and A86 highways will undoubtedly cause inconvenience for drivers, and the recommended detour routes are likely to add time to journeys. Motorists are strongly advised to:

  • Plan their journeys carefully, taking into account the scheduled closures and detour routes.
  • Allow extra time for travel, particularly during peak hours.
  • Consider alternative routes or modes of transportation if possible.
  • Stay informed about the latest traffic updates and road conditions through real-time traffic monitoring services.
  • Exercise caution and patience when driving in the affected areas, as increased traffic congestion is expected.
  • Be aware of signage indicating detours and changes in traffic patterns.
  • Respect speed limits and maintain a safe following distance to minimize the risk of accidents.

The completion of the T1 tramway extension will ultimately bring significant benefits to the region, providing enhanced public transportation options and improved connectivity. However, the construction process will inevitably involve temporary disruptions and inconvenience for drivers. By staying informed and planning ahead, motorists can minimize the impact of these disruptions and ensure a safe and efficient journey.

The DiRIF will likely provide updated information and further guidance as the projects progress. It is recommended that drivers regularly consult the DiRIF website or traffic information services for the latest updates on road closures, detours, and any other relevant information that may affect their travel plans. The cooperation and understanding of the public are essential to ensure the smooth and safe completion of these important infrastructure projects.
