Rheinland-Pfalz CDU Calls for Enhanced Security Measures following Munich Attack
Mainz, Germany – The Christian Democratic Union (CDU) faction in Rhineland-Palatinate has issued an urgent call for concrete security measures following the suspected attack on a demonstration in downtown Munich.
"People are demanding action, not political rhetoric," declared Dirk Herber, the CDU’s expert on internal affairs, in Mainz. "We believe that the risk of attacks is currently at an unprecedented level."
According to Herber, there are approximately 160 foreign high-risk offenders residing in Rhineland-Palatinate, posing a potential threat. He urged the state government to immediately instruct security authorities to fully utilize all legal avenues under immigration law and the Rhineland-Palatinate Police and Public Order Act to ensure public safety.
"In light of the recent events in Munich, we need to take immediate steps to enhance the safety of upcoming street carnivals in Rhineland-Palatinate," Herber emphasized, citing the importance of protecting these festive events.
The Munich incident, in which a 24-year-old rejected Afghan asylum seeker allegedly drove his car into a Verdi union demonstration from behind, left at least 28 people injured.
The CDU’s Forderungen include:
- Increased police presence and patrols at public gatherings and events
- Enhanced screening and security checks at entry points and checkpoints
- Swift and decisive action against individuals suspected of posing a security risk
- Improved coordination and information sharing among security agencies
- Strengthened support for victims of violence and terrorism
Herber also called on the state government to provide additional resources and funding to law enforcement agencies to enable them to effectively fulfill their security mandate.
"The safety and well-being of our citizens is paramount," Herber stressed. "We cannot afford to be complacent or allow ourselves to be terrorized. It is time to take bold and decisive action to protect our communities."
The CDU’s Forderungen have been met with mixed reactions from other political parties and civil society organizations. Some have expressed support for enhanced security measures, while others have voiced concerns about potential civil liberties infringements.
The state government has indicated its commitment to exploring all options to enhance public safety while respecting fundamental rights and freedoms. Further discussions and consultations are expected to take place in the coming days and weeks.
