Darmstadt Looks to End Slump against Braunschweig Amid Relegation Concerns

Darmstadt Looks to Halt Descent at Abstiegs-Threatened Braunschweig

SV Darmstadt 98 travels to relegation-battling Eintracht Braunschweig on Saturday, desperate to reverse their negative trend. Failure to do so could drag the Hessen back into the thick of the relegation battle.

Darmstadt’s struggles have seen them fall away from the Zweitliga summit. "We’re in a tough and negative phase in terms of results," admitted Darmstadt coach Florian Kohfeldt. "But we still have a few tricks up our sleeve to get through this phase with all its difficulties."

Braunschweig, in 16th place, holds the relegation playoff spot, seven points adrift of Kohfeldt’s side. Darmstadt has failed to win in five matches, conceding three successive defeats without scoring. They’ve managed just one point in 2023.

"We are aware of our situation and the circumstances around it," Kohfeldt said. "We’re looking ahead in a solution-oriented way. But there’s no question that we need points and results."

Kohfeldt will be without captain Fabian Nürnberger, sent off in the match against Elversberg for a brutal foul. The exact length of his ban is yet to be determined. Matej Maglica’s participation is also in doubt. However, Tobias Kempe is back fit.

In Braunschweig, Darmstadt will strive to reclaim their reward for their strong foundations, clear vision, teamwork, and desire. Kohfeldt believes the team has the potential to overcome this difficult period.

"Everyone has the approach of finding solutions for themselves," the 42-year-old said. "The task is to synchronize that so that everyone wants to find the same solutions."

In stressful situations, Kohfeldt noted that the players have been overly eager to force the issue.

Key Player Battles

  • Marvin Mehlem (Braunschweig) vs. Emir Karic (Darmstadt): Mehlem has been a vital attacking outlet for Braunschweig, while Karic is the anchor of Darmstadt’s defense.

  • Filip Benkovic (Braunschweig) vs. Lasse Sorensen (Darmstadt): Benkovic has been a rock for Braunschweig, but Sorensen’s experience and composure could prove vital for Darmstadt.

  • Anthony Ujah (Braunschweig) vs. Donis Avdijaj (Darmstadt): Ujah has been struggling for goals, but his pace and power could pose a threat. Avdijaj, on the other hand, has been a consistent performer for Darmstadt.

Match Prediction

Darmstadt will be desperate to end their barren run, but Braunschweig is fighting for survival. The Hessen have the quality to overcome their woes, but their lack of form makes this a tough match to predict. A hard-fought draw seems like the most likely outcome.
