Video Surveillance Enhances Protection of Frankfurt’s Westend Synagogue

Additional Security Measures Implemented at Frankfurt’s West End Synagogue

Video Surveillance to Enhance Protection

To bolster the security of the Jewish community in Frankfurt, the West End Synagogue will be equipped with additional protective measures, including video surveillance. A provisional mast with two video cameras, provided by the police, is now operational, offering enhanced oversight of the synagogue’s vicinity and providing increased security for its members. The camera footage will be accessible by the responsible police station, the police headquarters, and the synagogue’s security personnel.

Permanent Installations Planned

According to the police and city officials, the cameras will not remain a temporary measure. In the coming months, plans are in place to install two permanently fixed masts, stated Frankfurt’s Police President, Stefan Müller. These permanent structures will be financed by the city rather than the police. However, the police will continue to manage the surveillance system. The cameras will enable monitoring of the streets in the immediate vicinity of the synagogue.

Legal Framework for Increased Protection

The implementation of video surveillance is made possible by the newly enacted police law. In December 2023, the state parliament passed legislation aiming to enhance the protection of vulnerable religious sites, particularly synagogues, churches, and other places of worship, through video surveillance. The installation of the video surveillance system at the West End Synagogue marks the first implementation of this new law.

Enhanced Security for Jewish Community

Daniel Korn, a member of the Jewish community’s board, expressed appreciation for the additional security measures. "I believe it will not only provide an increased sense of security but also serve as a symbolic reminder of the need to actively protect our community," he said.

Rise in Anti-Semitism

Hesse’s Minister of the Interior, Roman Poseck (CDU), and Police President Müller emphasized the importance of protecting Jewish life in Germany and Frankfurt. Following the Hamas terror attack on Israel in October 2023, anti-Semitic offenses have surged in Hesse. "We must therefore take all necessary measures to effectively safeguard Jewish life," stated Poseck.

Enhanced Security Complementing Existing Measures

Prior to the attack, the West End Synagogue had already benefited from the Hessian police’s 24/7 security presence. The video surveillance system will not replace this existing protection but rather complement it. "It is an additional security enhancement that is unfortunately necessary given the current situation," explained the Minister of the Interior.

Conclusion

The implementation of video surveillance at the West End Synagogue is a significant step in reinforcing the security of Frankfurt’s Jewish community. The measures aim to deter potential threats and provide additional peace of mind for members of the congregation. The new police law provides the necessary legal framework for such protective measures, ensuring that religious institutions are adequately protected against malicious acts.
