Germany’s Aerospace Industry Calls for Increased Investment in Space Defense Amidst Global Tensions
As international tensions continue to escalate, Germany’s aerospace industry has issued a clarion call to the government, urging it to bolster funding for military space capabilities. Marie-Christine von Hahn, CEO of the German Aerospace Industries Association (BDLI), emphasized during the Munich Security Conference that Germany and Europe rely on a "competitive infrastructure in space."
"If politics fails to recognize this, our sovereignty and position in the world are at stake," Hahn asserted in a statement released by the association.
The plea comes at a time when European governments are facing growing pressure from United States President Donald Trump to procure weapons from American manufacturers. While the aerospace association’s statement does not explicitly mention Trump, it references his demand that European NATO allies increase their defense spending to 5% of their respective GDPs.
According to data provided by the BDLI, the United States accounted for more than half of the 220 global civil and military satellite launches last year. China launched 67, Russia 20, and India 7. Europe, in contrast, lagged behind with only 4 rocket launches.
"Germany’s and Europe’s space industry can easily keep up technologically," Hahn declared. "However, we must now emphatically ensure that we are also independent in space reconnaissance and defense."
The BDLI represents over 260 member companies in both civil and military aerospace, generating an annual turnover of around 46 billion euros. Ahead of the Munich Security Conference, the Federation of German Industries (BDI) convened a space symposium at the Münchner Künstlerhaus.
