Tragic Loss: Hamburg Mourns Professor Thomas Großbölting in ICE Incident
The academic community of Hamburg is reeling from the untimely demise of Professor Thomas Großbölting, who perished in the tragic ICE train accident on Tuesday. Deeply saddened, Hamburg’s Second Mayor and Senator for Science, Katharina Fegebank (Greens), paid tribute to the esteemed scholar on Facebook, stating, "Science has lost a brilliant representative who decisively shaped his field, the Research Center for Contemporary History, and the Academy of World Religions."
"Professor Großbölting was an exceptional individual who epitomized interdisciplinarity," Fegebank continued. "His passion for bridging disciplines was evident in every encounter with him."
Großbölting’s astute analyses not only advanced his academic pursuits but also enriched contemporary societal discourse. Since 2020, he had served as Director of the Research Center for Contemporary History in Hamburg and Professor of Modern/Contemporary History in the Department of German History at the University of Hamburg. His contributions left an indelible mark on the university and the city’s research landscape.
On Tuesday, an ICE train carrying 291 passengers collided with a truck at a railway crossing in the Rönneburg district. Großbölting, 55, succumbed to severe injuries sustained in the accident despite receiving prompt medical attention. The incident also left 25 others injured, including 6 ICE passengers with moderate injuries and 19 with minor injuries, according to earlier reports from the Federal Police.
