DOK Leipzig Film Festival Director to Step Down Early Due to Health Reasons

Intendant of DOK Leipzig Film Festival Announces Early Departure Due to Health Reasons

Christoph Terhechte, the Intendant of the DOK Leipzig Film Festival, has announced that he will be stepping down from his role two years earlier than initially planned, citing personal reasons. He will remain in office until January 31, 2026, before retiring prematurely.

A Decade of Leadership

Terhechte took over the reins of DOK Leipzig on January 1, 2020, and was originally scheduled to serve until January 31, 2028. During his tenure, he has overseen the festival’s transition through a period of significant challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic.

Despite these obstacles, DOK Leipzig has flourished under Terhechte’s guidance, maintaining its status as one of the world’s leading documentary and animation festivals. Its 2023 edition attracted over 40,000 visitors and showcased more than 300 films from around the globe.

A Legacy of Innovation

Under Terhechte’s leadership, DOK Leipzig has introduced several innovative initiatives, including the DOK Co-Pro Market, which supports international documentary co-productions, and the DOK Forward Lab, which fosters new talents and encourages experimentation in documentary filmmaking.

His commitment to showcasing diverse voices and perspectives has also been a hallmark of his tenure. He has expanded the festival’s programming to include works by underrepresented filmmakers and films that explore pressing social and political issues.

Personal Health Takes Precedence

In a statement, Terhechte cited health setbacks as the reason for his decision to step down early. "Leading DOK Leipzig through the past five years and defending the international significance of the world’s oldest festival for documentary and animated film has been a challenging but rewarding experience for both the team and me as Intendant," he said. "However, my health situation has prompted me to make this difficult decision."

Selection Process for Successor

The City of Leipzig will establish a selection committee to appoint Terhechte’s successor. The process is expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2025.

Future of DOK Leipzig

The upcoming 68th edition of DOK Leipzig will take place from October 27 to November 2, 2025. The festival will continue to build on its legacy of showcasing groundbreaking documentary and animated films, while exploring new frontiers and supporting the next generation of filmmakers.

Christoph Terhechte’s early departure marks the end of an era for DOK Leipzig. However, his contributions to the festival and the documentary filmmaking community as a whole will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact. As the search for his successor begins, DOK Leipzig looks forward to a new chapter in its storied history.
