The Trump Narrative: A Carefully Constructed Reality

Donald Trump’s journey from real estate developer to reality television star to President of the United States is a story built on carefully crafted narratives. Before entering the political arena, NBC’s "The Apprentice" provided him with a platform to rewrite his history, portraying himself as a brilliant business mogul rather than a privileged heir with a record of bankruptcies and financial controversies. This strategy of controlling the narrative, painting himself as the ultimate winner regardless of the facts, remains central to Trump’s public persona.

This framing helps to understand his recent performance at the White House before his departure for a trip to the Middle East. During an hour-long address, he boasted about an executive order on prescription drug prices, a trade deal with China, and a promised gift from a foreign country.

The executive order, intended to lower drug costs, sets a 30-day deadline for pharmaceutical companies to voluntarily reduce prices. Failure to comply would result in government intervention. The president promised significant price drops, ranging from 50% to 90%. The effectiveness and legality of this order are questionable, especially considering a previous similar attempt that was halted by legal challenges. The real purpose of this action is to divert attention from other controversial issues, like the Republican party’s efforts to cut Medicaid.

The trade deal with China is another area where Trump’s narrative diverges from reality. The agreement involved him reducing tariffs on Chinese goods while maintaining some existing tariffs. This action followed a period of escalating trade tensions that negatively impacted financial markets and the American economy. In reality, Trump was forced to back down from his tariffs. However, in Trump’s version, it is a win.

The promised gift of a Boeing 747 jet from the ruling family of Qatar further exemplifies Trump’s narrative control. The acceptance of such a gift raises concerns about violations of the U.S. Constitution’s Emoluments Clause, which prohibits presidents from accepting gifts from foreign entities without congressional approval. He tried to dismiss these concerns, framing the criticism as an attack on America itself. His claim that the jet will be used until his term ends and then donated to his presidential library is met with skepticism by many.

The core of Trump’s strategy is to create a reality where he is always victorious, regardless of the actual circumstances. He relies on diversion, exaggeration, and outright falsehoods to maintain this image. Critics and those who point out inconsistencies in his claims are dismissed as "losers" or "haters of America."

This pattern has become a defining characteristic of Trump’s communication style. Whether it’s exaggerating the impact of his policies, downplaying his failures, or attacking his critics, Trump consistently manipulates the narrative to present himself in a favorable light.

The question remains: how many Americans are willing to overlook this duplicity? How many will continue to fall for his carefully constructed reality, and how many will demand accountability? The answer to this question will have significant implications for the future of American politics.

The Trump narrative has also been successful because he has been able to tap into the frustrations and anxieties of a segment of the population that feels left behind by globalization and political correctness. By speaking directly to these voters and offering simple solutions to complex problems, Trump has cultivated a loyal following that is willing to overlook his flaws and inconsistencies.

The media also plays a role in perpetuating the Trump narrative. The constant coverage of his rallies, tweets, and press conferences provides him with a platform to disseminate his message directly to the public, often without critical scrutiny. The media’s focus on the spectacle of Trump’s actions can overshadow the substance of his policies and the implications for the country.

Ultimately, the Trump narrative is a product of a confluence of factors, including his personality, his media savvy, and the political climate. The question is whether this narrative will continue to resonate with Americans as the country faces new challenges and confronts the legacy of the Trump presidency.

There is no real plan in the trump administration. Plans are for suckers, declare victory and jet off on a state visit to Middle East countries that have a vested interest in making you feel like a winner.

Trump raised tariffs on the world, the markets, particularly the bond market – which we need to finance our debt – rebelled. Trump then was forced to back off. End of story. There is no end to the story where he isn’t a winner.

His claim that he will use the jet until his term ends, then it will go to his presidential library. He also insisted that he would not use the plane when he is no longer president.
