Erika Sinner: From Pharmaceutical Pioneer to Superhero Advocate
Erika Sinner, the visionary CEO and founder of Directorie®, is making waves not only within the pharmaceutical industry but also in the lives of countless children through her impactful nonprofit, TinySuperheroes®. Beyond her business acumen, Erika is also the author of “Pets Are Family,” a testament to her belief in the importance of empathy, a value she champions as a core leadership principle. Erika’s mission is clear: to foster compassionate workplaces and to bring joy and empowerment to children facing disabilities and critical medical conditions.
In a captivating premiere episode of season 10 of "The Rhonda Swan Show," Erika generously shared her remarkable journey, tracing her path from humble beginnings in the pharmaceutical industry to her current position as a transformative leader and dedicated changemaker. Her narrative is a powerful testament to resilience, unyielding innovation, and a profound commitment to making a tangible difference in the world.
The Rise of Directorie: From Receptionist to CEO
Erika’s professional journey began at the age of 21 when she accepted a receptionist position at a pharmaceutical company. Balancing her work commitments with night school studies, Erika quickly discovered a deep passion for the pharmaceutical industry. She dedicated herself to learning the intricacies of the business, steadily working her way up through various roles, eventually taking on leadership positions for major brands.
After 11 years of invaluable experience in the pharmaceutical arena, Erika recognized an opportunity to disrupt the status quo and implement innovative solutions. Fueled by her entrepreneurial spirit, she founded Directorie, a company that has earned a coveted spot on the Inc. 5000 list. Directorie specializes in assisting small to mid-sized pharmaceutical organizations in successfully launching their products. The company provides scalable, contracted commercial teams, offering a flexible and cost-effective solution for companies navigating the demanding and competitive pharmaceutical landscape.
"Our model enables companies to conserve valuable capital and scale their operations as needed," Erika explained. "We provide comprehensive support through every stage of the product launch process, ensuring that our clients can maintain commercial momentum, even when facing challenging circumstances."
Empathy in Leadership: A Defining Value
Erika’s leadership style is firmly grounded in empathy, a value that has been shaped by her personal experiences. Having grown up in a household marked by instability, she deeply understands the importance of creating a safe, secure, and supportive environment for her employees.
"I’ve personally experienced the impact of layoffs and uncertainty, and I recognize how vital a regular paycheck is to an individual’s sense of security," she said. "As a CEO, it is my responsibility to ensure that my team members feel valued, supported, and understood."
Erika actively demonstrates her commitment to empathy through the implementation of compassionate workplace policies. One notable example is the provision of pet bereavement leave. Inspired by her personal experience of grieving the loss of a beloved dog, Erika recognized the profound emotional impact that such losses can have on employees. She made it a priority to acknowledge these feelings and offer support.
"It’s about demonstrating that we see our employees as whole individuals, with feelings and lives outside of work, and that we genuinely care about their well-being," she explained.
TinySuperheroes: Empowering Children Through Play
The remarkable success of Directorie provided Erika with the resources and platform to acquire and expand TinySuperheroes, transforming her business achievements into a vehicle for purpose. While Directorie stands as a testament to Erika’s business acumen and strategic thinking, TinySuperheroes serves as a profound expression of her compassionate heart. The nonprofit provides superhero capes and empowering patches to children with disabilities and critical conditions, helping them to feel brave, resilient, and empowered as they navigate challenging medical journeys.
The TinySuperheroes program begins with a starter kit, which includes a personalized superhero cape and a patch representing the child’s initial "mission." As the children undergo medical procedures and overcome obstacles, they earn additional patches, transforming their clinical journey into an inspiring adventure.
"Play equals safety," Erika explained. "When children feel like they are playing, they feel safe and secure. This sense of safety makes them more receptive to care and healing."
The impact of TinySuperheroes extends far beyond the children themselves. Parents gain a new, empowering language to support their children, and hospital staff members find renewed joy and purpose in their work. "It’s about fostering a culture of hope, resilience, and connection," Erika said.
A Vision for the Future
Erika’s ambitious goal is to reach 5 million children by expanding the TinySuperheroes program to more hospitals across the nation. Currently active in five hospitals, the program has already made a significant impact, and Erika has plans to scale the program to 226 children’s hospitals throughout the United States.
For children whose hospitals are not yet affiliated with the program, TinySuperheroes offers starter kits and provides free monthly missions that families can participate in from the comfort of their own homes. "We want every child to know that they are not broken," Erika said. "They are brave, strong, and truly extraordinary. We want to empower them to embrace their inner superhero."
