Dolly Parton Declines Judging Roles on Singing Competitions, Cites Sensitivity

Dolly Parton, the beloved country music icon known for hits like "9 to 5" and "Jolene," has revealed why she has consistently turned down offers to be a judge on popular singing competition shows such as "The Voice" and "American Idol." While many celebrities eagerly embrace the opportunity to sit in a spinning chair or hand out a golden ticket, Parton’s reasons stem from her deep empathy for aspiring artists.

"I’ve been asked to do that a lot of times," Parton shared in an interview with E! News. "It’s too hard for me. That’s why I don’t accept it, because I know how sincere everybody is. Even if they’re not that good, they believe they are. And I just can’t hurt people."

Parton’s reluctance to critique aspiring artists underscores her genuine compassion and understanding of the emotional investment these individuals pour into their craft. She recognizes the vulnerability and self-belief that drive them to audition, and she simply cannot bring herself to deliver potentially crushing criticism.

Despite her aversion to judging, Parton has made guest appearances on both "American Idol" and "The Voice" as a mentor. In 2008, she joined "American Idol" season 7, where several contestants, including winner David Cook, performed her songs. She also served as a guest mentor on "The Voice" twice, in 2015 for season 9 and in 2016 for season 11. These mentoring roles allowed her to offer guidance and support without the pressure of having to eliminate contestants.

While a permanent judging role on a singing competition is not in Parton’s future, she remains incredibly busy with other exciting projects. In 2026, she is set to debut her autobiographical musical, "Dolly: An Original Musical," on Broadway. This highly anticipated production will undoubtedly showcase her remarkable life story and musical talent.

In addition to her Broadway venture, Parton recently celebrated the 40th anniversary of her beloved theme park, Dollywood. "I’m just very proud of all of it, because I’ve seen it grow," she told E! News. "It’s like having a house full of kids. Every time something new goes in, it’s like, ‘Oh, we got a new baby, we got a new kid in the family.’"

Dollywood has become a cherished destination for families, offering a wide array of attractions, entertainment, and experiences. Parton’s pride in the park is evident, as she views it as a testament to her vision and commitment to providing joy and entertainment to others. "But it’s an amazing park and it’s catered to families… we’re proud of that. I think I’m as proud of that as anything, that people want to come back," she added.

Parton’s recent comments come in the wake of the passing of her husband of many years, Carl Dean. Dean passed away on March 3rd. Parton shared a heartfelt statement on Instagram, expressing her deep love and gratitude for their time together.

"Carl and I spent many wonderful years together," Parton wrote. "Words can’t do justice to the love we shared for over 60 years. Thank you for your prayers and sympathy."

On March 7, Parton further honored her late husband by releasing a new song dedicated to him, titled "If You Hadn’t Been There." She shared a throwback photo of herself with Dean on Instagram, along with a touching caption.

"I fell in love with Carl Dean when I was 18 years old," she wrote. "We have spent 60 precious and meaningful years together. Like all great love stories, they never end. They live on in memory and song. He will always be the star of my life story, and I dedicate this song to him."

Parton’s enduring love for Dean and her dedication to her craft are testaments to her remarkable character. She continues to inspire and uplift others with her music, her philanthropy, and her unwavering commitment to kindness and compassion. While she may not be judging aspiring singers on television, her influence on the music industry and the lives of countless individuals remains profound. Her legacy extends far beyond the stage and screen, solidifying her status as a true icon and a national treasure.

Dolly Parton’s decision to avoid judging roles on singing competitions highlights a refreshing perspective in the entertainment industry, one that prioritizes empathy and encouragement over harsh criticism. It’s a reminder that success isn’t just about reaching the top, but also about the impact we have on others along the way. And in Dolly Parton’s case, that impact is undeniably positive and far-reaching.
