According to Fairtrade Germany, a Cologne-based organization affiliated with an international network dedicated to upholding Fairtrade standards, the overall sales volume of Fairtrade products in Germany increased by five percent in the past year. This marks the most significant increase in sales volume recorded in the last four years, signaling a renewed momentum in the Fairtrade movement within the country.

The surge in demand was particularly pronounced for key Fairtrade commodities such as coffee, bananas, and cocoa. These products witnessed strong sales performances, driven in part by increased visibility and availability across various retail channels. Benjamin Drösel, a board member at Fairtrade Germany, emphasized that "Fairtrade sales are developing very positively despite the economically challenging situation." This statement underscores the unwavering commitment of German consumers to supporting fair and ethical trade practices, even amidst economic headwinds.

The growing popularity of Fairtrade products is evident in the increasing market penetration of Fairtrade-certified goods in Germany. According to Fairtrade Germany’s data, approximately one in twenty coffee packages sold in Germany now bears the Fairtrade seal, signifying that the coffee beans were sourced from Fairtrade-certified producers. The penetration rate is even higher for cocoa products, with about one in five cocoa products carrying the Fairtrade seal.

In 2024, German consumers collectively spent an estimated 2.9 billion euros on Fairtrade products, translating to an average expenditure of 35 euros per capita. This represents a substantial 13 percent increase in total sales compared to the previous year, highlighting the growing consumer appetite for Fairtrade goods.

Notably, the increase in sales revenue outpaced the growth in sales volume, indicating a rise in the average price of Fairtrade products. Fairtrade Germany attributes this phenomenon to the increasing global market prices for raw materials such as coffee and cocoa.

Claudia Brück, another board member at Fairtrade Germany, explained that "Currently, the world market prices for raw materials such as coffee or cocoa are very high." However, she cautioned that "Unfortunately, farmers do not automatically benefit from this." She further elaborated that the elevated prices are driven by a combination of factors, including speculative trading on commodity exchanges and adverse weather conditions leading to crop losses.

Despite the high market prices, Fairtrade Germany emphasizes the continued importance of the Fairtrade system. Brück stated that "Even in times of high prices, Fairtrade remains important." The Fairtrade system provides a safety net for farmers by ensuring that they receive a fair and stable price for their produce, regardless of market fluctuations.

To be eligible to display the Fairtrade seal on their products, companies must adhere to stringent criteria that ensure fair production and trade practices.
