HSV Women Make History at Volksparkstadion: Halbfinal Bound in DFB Cup

HSV Women Make History with Thumping Victory at Volksparkstadion

In a triumph for women’s football, the Hamburger SV ladies celebrated a remarkable debut at the Volksparkstadion, securing a spot in the DFB Cup semifinals with a decisive 2-0 victory over league rivals Borussia Mönchengladbach. This momentous achievement marks the first time the women’s team has graced the hallowed grounds of the renowned arena.

Before a roaring crowd of 16,529 spectators, Emilia Hirche broke the deadlock in the dying moments of the first half, her headed goal sending the HSV faithful into raptures. The second strike came courtesy of Vildan Kardesler, assisted by the skillful Lisa Baum, extending the lead for the Hanseatic team, who only recently ascended to the 2nd Bundesliga last season.

The massive turnout, exceeding 16,000 tickets sold, speaks volumes about the growing popularity of women’s football in Hamburg. The attendance record for a women’s match in the city stands at 19,710, set in September 2023 during the DFB Cup clash between FC St. Pauli and Hamburger SV at the Millerntor-Stadion.

The HSV women’s team is mirroring the success of their male counterparts, with both sides vying for promotion to the first division this season. Currently ranked sixth in the 2. Bundesliga, the women are within striking distance of the promotion zone, while the men continue their pursuit of a top-flight return.

This historic debut at the Volksparkstadion holds significant implications beyond the immediate match result. It bolsters Hamburg’s bid to host matches during the 2029 Women’s European Championship. The German Football Association (DFB) plans to submit a proposal to host the tournament and will unveil potential host cities on Friday.

"We are already working diligently to ensure that more girls and women participate in football in Hamburg, nurturing talent for the national team," said Christian Okun, President of the Hamburg Football Association. "A 2029 European Championship in Hamburg presents an unparalleled opportunity to strengthen the foundation of women’s and girls’ football on a lasting basis."

The HSV women’s triumph at the Volksparkstadion serves as a powerful testament to the rising tide of women’s football in Germany. With increasing public support and the potential to host major international tournaments, the future looks bright for the game in Hamburg and beyond.
