Trump’s Derby Day Wishes and a Vision of a New "Golden Age"

Former President Donald Trump released a statement on Saturday, offering his best wishes to the participants of the 151st Kentucky Derby. In a message issued hours before the iconic race, Trump lauded the event as a representation of American tradition and used the occasion to paint a broader picture of national resurgence and prosperity.

The statement, released just before the field of nineteen thoroughbreds prepared to thunder across the 1.25-mile track at Churchill Downs in front of an estimated 150,000 spectators, celebrated the Kentucky Derby as more than just a sporting event. Trump described it as an "iconic American institution and an elegant celebration of our culture, customs, and unwavering competitive spirit."

He drew a parallel between the inaugural Kentucky Derby in 1875 and the present day, highlighting the historical context of the race’s inception. He noted that the first Derby coincided with a period of significant transformation in the United States. "When the first Kentucky Derby commenced in the spring of 1875—1 year before the 100th anniversary of American independence—our Nation was in the midst of a grand transformation," the statement read. Trump emphasized the westward expansion, the booming industries, and the prevalent belief in Manifest Destiny that characterized the era, inspiring the ten thousand spectators who gathered to witness the race.

Trump’s message extended beyond a simple acknowledgment of the Derby. He framed this year’s race as a reminder that the United States is on the cusp of a new "Golden Age." He directly compared the present moment to the transformative period in which the Derby was founded, suggesting that the nation is experiencing a similar resurgence. "Now, as our Nation gathers for that same Derby 150 years later—and 1 year before we celebrate 250 years of independence—we recognize that we are in the early days of a new Golden Age," Trump declared.

He attributed this new era to a revitalization of the American economy, a strengthening of American power, and a resurgence of the American Dream, suggesting that his administration had laid the groundwork for this positive shift.

"Before our very eyes, we are witnessing a resurgence of the American economy, a rebirth of American strength, and a restoration of the American Dream," the statement asserted. He continued, stating the ongoing pledge "to continue the work of reforming our country, reharnessing our heritage, and reigniting all our greatness and glory."

The statement concluded with traditional well-wishes for the race and a patriotic benediction. "I send my best wishes for a safe and successful Kentucky Derby. May God bless you, and may He continue to bless the United States of America. May the best horse win!" Trump said.

Before the race, "Journalism" emerged as the 3-1 favorite, positioned to start from the No. 8 post. The No. 8 post has a history of success at Churchill Downs, having produced nine winners over the years.

The race, scheduled to begin at 6:57 p.m. ET and broadcast on NBC, faced the possibility of challenging weather conditions. Forecasters predicted a 90% chance of rain, potentially turning the track into a muddy one. The elements may have impacted the racers.

The Kentucky Derby, steeped in tradition and pageantry, remains a significant event on the American sporting calendar. The former President’s statement connects the historical significance of the event with his political vision. His words added a unique element to the pre-race atmosphere, stirring discussions among the attendees and observers of the race. The blend of sporting spectacle and political commentary further solidified the Kentucky Derby’s role as a symbol of American culture and identity. The statement from former President Trump reflects his unwavering belief in the nation’s capacity for renewal and his conviction that America is on the verge of a new and prosperous chapter. His message echoed the sentiments of national pride and optimism that traditionally accompany the Kentucky Derby, while also injecting a clear political perspective into the context of the race.
