Louisville, KY – An Unpredictable Kentucky Derby Looms

The buzz surrounding this year’s Kentucky Derby solidified early, pinpointing Journalism as the horse to beat after his impressive Santa Anita Derby victory on April 5th. Journalism, trained by Bob Baffert, convincingly overtook Baeza in the Santa Anita Derby stretch, leaving little doubt about his standing as the top 3-year-old in California. The manner of his triumph was particularly noteworthy. Jockey Umberto Rispoli encountered significant trouble along the rail, forcing Journalism to drop back before skillfully maneuvering to the outside on the second turn. This display of resilience and adaptability cemented his position as the clear favorite heading to Churchill Downs.

Hall of Fame jockey Jerry Bailey weighed in, stating, "Journalism, in my opinion, got in as much trouble in the Santa Anita Derby as he’s liable to get in in the Kentucky Derby." Bailey argued that Journalism’s come-from-behind style wouldn’t be a hindrance in the crowded 19-horse field.

However, the Kentucky Derby, steeped in history and tradition, is notoriously unpredictable. The unique circumstances that unfold during the race are often impossible to foresee, frequently leading to surprising outcomes. While favorites dominated the Derby scene in the 2010s, the last three winners have defied expectations, offering substantial payouts: Rich Strike ($163.60), Mage ($32.42), and Mystik Dan ($39.22) for a $2 ticket. This recent trend serves as a stark reminder that anything can happen on the first Saturday in May.

Despite Journalism’s impeccable record, concerns remain that temper enthusiasm. While he has consistently performed well, his three significant stakes victories in California were achieved against relatively small fields of only five horses. Additionally, jockey Umberto Rispoli’s limited Derby experience (only two previous rides) raises questions about his ability to navigate the complex race conditions. These factors create an opening to consider alternative contenders, particularly for those seeking value in their wagering.

Given the composition of this year’s field, where the early pace doesn’t project to be exceptionally fast, a different type of contender emerges as an appealing choice. The ideal horse would settle into a comfortable position around seventh or eighth place down the backstretch, avoiding potential traffic issues. At the 3/8 pole, this horse would unleash a powerful surge, creating enough separation to thwart the late-closing efforts of horses like Journalism.

Enter Luxor Cafe, a son of 2015 Triple Crown champion American Pharoah. Luxor Cafe is attempting to achieve a feat never before accomplished in Derby history: win the race after shipping in from Asia. The challenge is undeniably significant, but not insurmountable. Last year, Forever Young demonstrated the remarkable progress of Japanese racing, proving that its top 3-year-olds can compete at the highest level internationally. Had Forever Young not encountered bumping in the stretch while vying for position with Sierra Leone, he might have secured the roses instead of Mystik Dan.

The question is whether Luxor Cafe possesses the same caliber as Forever Young, and the quality of the competition he faced in Japan remains a matter of speculation. The ability to adapt to the unique elements of Churchill Downs, along with the potential impact of the long journey, adds further uncertainty. However, based on his performances in his prep races, Luxor Cafe exhibits a distinct talent. He displays a tactical running style that aligns well with the demands of the Derby, and he demonstrates an immediate response when jockey Joao Moreira signals the time to make his move. If Luxor Cafe’s turn of foot translates to the American track, he could surge past the field as they approach the top of the stretch.

Whether Luxor Cafe has the potential to win remains to be seen, but in a year where question marks surround many of the favorites, a horse with his talent, available at around 15-1 on the morning line, presents an intriguing opportunity.

Beyond Luxor Cafe and Journalism, several other horses have a chance to contend for victory or at least secure a strong showing.

Sovereignty, trained by Bill Mott, boasts impressive athleticism and a decisive five-length victory at Churchill Downs last October. However, he needs to improve upon his performance in the Florida Derby, where he finished a clear second without any apparent excuses.

Sandman, the Arkansas Derby winner, is expected to finish strong late in the race but relies on a favorable setup to contend for the win.

American Promise, trained by the legendary D. Wayne Lukas, possesses an impressive physique akin to his sire, Justify. However, he lacked significant accomplishments before his recent victory in the Virginia Derby.

Other contenders, such as Burnam Square, Chunk of Gold, and Baeza, have the potential to secure a spot on the board, opening possibilities for exotic wagers.

Given the short odds associated with Journalism and Sovereignty, coupled with the absence of a truly dominant force in the field, the success or failure of the $100 bankroll this year hinges largely on Luxor Cafe’s ability to make history. If he can, the evening could prove highly profitable.

Recommended Betting Strategy:

  • $30 to win on Luxor Cafe
  • $8 exacta box Luxor Cafe/Sovereignty ($16 total bet)
  • $2 trifecta box Luxor Cafe/Sovereignty/Journalism ($12 total bet)
  • $1 trifecta Luxor Cafe over Sovereignty/Journalism/American Promise/Sandman/Chunk of Gold/Burnam Square/Baeza over Sovereignty/Journalism/American Promise/Sandman/Chunk of Gold/Burnam Square/Baeza ($42 total bet)

As always, remember to savor the excitement of Derby Day and only wager what you can comfortably afford to lose. Best of luck!
