Rock the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame: 2025 Nominees Announced

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has unveiled its 2025 nominees, and the lineup is a testament to the enduring power and diversity of rock music. Among the 14 hopefuls vying for induction, eight are first-time nominees, representing a wide spectrum of rock subgenres.

First-Timers Rock the Ballot

Leading the charge of newcomers are iconic British rock band Bad Company, known for their timeless hits like "Can’t Get Enough" and "Rock ‘n’ Roll Fantasy." Another notable first-timer is The Black Crowes, the blues-infused rock duo from Atlanta, Georgia. Their signature sound and electrifying live performances have earned them a loyal following.

Legendary rhythm and blues pioneer Chubby Checker joins the fray, bringing his infectious dance moves and classic tracks like "The Twist" to the forefront. Equally influential is Joe Cocker, a soulful singer whose raw and passionate vocals have made him a music icon.

New wave and post-punk legend Billy Idol adds his distinctive style to the mix with hits like "Rebel Yell" and "Eyes Without a Face." Maná, Mexico’s most successful rock band, fuses Latin rhythms with rock anthems, creating a unique and captivating sound.

Hip-hop duo Outkast brings their innovative blend of Southern hip-hop, funk, and soul to the nomination table. Their critically acclaimed albums, including "ATLiens" and "Stankonia," have cemented their status as one of the most influential groups in hip-hop history. Completing the first-timer roster is Phish, the jam band extraordinaire known for their extended improvisations and devoted fanbase.

Returning Nominees Seek Redemption

After receiving nominations in previous years, several artists are vying for induction once more. Mariah Carey, the pop diva with a remarkable vocal range, returns to the ballot. British rock band Oasis hopes to join their estranged brothers in the Hall of Fame after being inducted in 2019.

Cyndi Lauper, the quirky and unforgettable pop star, and Soundgarden, the grunge pioneers led by the late Chris Cornell, are also back in the running. The White Stripes, the minimalist blues-rock duo featuring Jack and Meg White, make their third appearance on the ballot.

Joy Division/New Order rounds out the returning nominees. This critically acclaimed post-punk band, known for their dark and atmospheric sound, includes two distinct eras: Joy Division, fronted by the enigmatic Ian Curtis, and New Order, who rose to new heights in the 1980s.

Special Nominees to Be Honored

In addition to the main induction categories, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame will also recognize artists in three special categories:

  • Musical Influence: This award honors those who have significantly impacted the development of rock music, regardless of whether they performed it themselves.
  • Musical Excellence: This award recognizes outstanding technical ability and artistry in the field of rock music.
  • Ahmet Ertegun Non-Performer Award: This award is presented to non-performers who have made significant contributions to the development of rock music, such as producers, engineers, and songwriters.

Induction Ceremony Details

Inductees for all categories will be announced in late April, after an international panel of over 1,200 industry experts casts their votes. The selection criteria include the artist’s impact on other musicians, the scope and longevity of their work, innovation, and technical excellence.

The highly anticipated induction ceremony will take place in the fall of 2025 in Los Angeles, California. Ticket and location details will be announced at a later date.

With such a diverse and talented group of nominees, the 2025 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction promises to be a memorable celebration of the enduring power of rock music. As the countdown to induction day begins, fans eagerly await the announcement of the artists who will forever etch their names into the annals of rock history.
