Arizona Political Landscape Faces Potential Upheaval Following Rep. Grijalva’s Death
The recent death of Arizona Congressman Raúl Grijalva has sent ripples throughout the state’s political sphere, potentially leading to a significant power shift. Among those considering a bid for the vacant seat in Arizona’s 7th congressional district is current Secretary of State Adrian Fontes, a Democrat.
Fontes, in a statement released Tuesday, expressed his deep admiration for the late Congressman Grijalva, who had served the district since 2003. "I have long admired Congressman Grijalva. We should all be grateful for his years of service," Fontes stated. He also revealed that he is "strongly considering a run to represent AZ-07, a place where I was born and raised, served my country in the Marine Corps, and protected democracy."
However, Fontes emphasized that "Right now, we must remember and appreciate the life and legacy of the late Congressman Grijalva." He added that he would have "more to say in the days ahead" regarding his potential candidacy.
Grijalva, a prominent Democratic figure, passed away earlier this month at the age of 77 due to complications from lung cancer. His passing leaves a void in Arizona’s political landscape and sets the stage for a special election to determine his successor.
The Resign-to-Run Dilemma and Gubernatorial Succession
Fontes’ potential entry into the congressional race would trigger Arizona’s "resign-to-run" law. This law mandates that Fontes would need to step down from his position as Secretary of State to pursue the congressional seat. Should Fontes resign, Democratic Governor Katie Hobbs would be responsible for appointing his replacement.
The Secretary of State’s office holds significant importance in Arizona’s government structure. The Secretary of State is next in line to become governor if the Governor leaves the state. If the Governor steps down, the Secretary of State ascends to governor.
The significance of this succession was highlighted when former Democratic Governor Janet Napolitano resigned to serve as the Homeland Security Secretary under President Barack Obama. This resulted in Republican Jan Brewer assuming the governorship.
However, Arizona’s succession laws are set to change in 2027 with the creation of the office of Lieutenant Governor. The Lieutenant Governor will become next in line for Governor.
Fontes’ Potential Gubernatorial Ambitions and Grijalva’s Daughter Weighs In
The possibility of Fontes running for Congress marks a shift from previous speculation that he was considering a primary challenge against Governor Hobbs in the 2026 election. That election is expected to be one of the most competitive gubernatorial races in the country.
Another potential contender for the congressional seat is Pima County Supervisor Adelita Grijalva, daughter of the late Congressman. She has acknowledged that she is considering a run to continue her father’s legacy but is waiting until after his funeral before making any official announcement. "Many have asked me if I would consider running to continue my father’s legacy. In between tears and hugs, my family and I are processing our profound loss as well as that of our community, state, and nation," she stated.
Special Election Details and Other Potential Candidates
The special primary election for Arizona’s 7th congressional district is scheduled for July 15, with the general election set for September 23. In the November election, Grijalva secured over 63% of the vote.
Tucson Mayor Regina Romero and State Representative Alma Hernandez, both Democrats, have chosen not to participate in the special election.
The Border Security Factor
The 7th congressional district encompasses a substantial portion of Arizona’s southern border. This area has become a focal point in recent years due to the ongoing issues of migration and drug trafficking. The candidates’ stances on border security and immigration policy will likely be crucial factors in the election.
The special election to fill Grijalva’s seat promises to be a closely watched contest with significant implications for Arizona’s political landscape. The decisions of Fontes and Grijalva’s daughter and the broader debate around border security will shape the direction of Arizona politics for years to come.
