Sling TV and Dish TV Drop Regional Sports Networks Amidst Pricing Dispute

The ongoing saga of regional sports network (RSN) streaming availability continues to unfold, leaving sports fans in the lurch. In the latest development, Sling TV and its parent company, Dish TV, have announced that they are ceasing support for the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network (MASN) and NBC regional sports networks. This decision will impact subscribers across ten states and Washington D.C., further complicating the landscape for viewers seeking to access their local sports teams.

Sling TV will no longer carry NBC Sports Washington, NBC Sports Bay Area, and NBC Sports California. Dish TV is cutting ties with MASN. These changes underscore the growing tension between streaming services and RSNs, primarily fueled by escalating costs and differing views on how these channels should be priced and distributed.

The core of the issue, as cited by both Sling TV and Dish TV, lies in the rapidly increasing rates charged by RSNs. Brian Neylon, group president of DISH TV, articulated the company’s position, emphasizing the unsustainable nature of the current RSN model. He stated that they presented an alternative proposal that would have allowed customers to subscribe to RSNs on an individual, à la carte basis. This system would empower viewers to choose which RSNs they want to pay for, rather than burdening all subscribers with the expense, regardless of their viewing habits.

Under Dish’s proposed model, the RSNs would have the autonomy to set the price for their channels. This, according to Neylon, would ensure that “no customer would be forced to pay for content they don’t watch, and the RSNs would determine the price customers would pay for their channels.” Dish contends that this approach would create a fairer and more transparent system for both consumers and the networks. Unfortunately, this offer was rejected, leading to the decision to remove the channels from their respective platforms.

Neylon emphasized the perceived flaws within the prevailing RSN model, arguing that it forces a disproportionate number of customers to subsidize channels that only a fraction of them actually watches. This inefficiency, combined with the relentless rise in RSN costs, prompted Dish TV and Sling TV to conclude that continuing to include these channels in their standard packages was no longer justifiable. He called the current framework "fundamentally broken" and untenable in the long term.

In response to the announcement, a spokesperson for the NBC Regional Sports Networks issued a statement, offering a different perspective on the matter. The NBC RSNs asserted that they had proposed to continue distribution on what they considered “fair market terms.” They claimed that Dish and Sling declined these terms, ultimately leading to the removal of the networks from their platforms. The statement also noted that many other distributors continue to carry the RSNs, encouraging viewers to consult the individual RSN websites for a complete list.

This latest dispute echoes similar incidents involving other streaming services, including YouTube TV, Fubo TV, and Hulu, all of which have previously dropped RSNs due to disagreements over pricing and distribution. While many subscribers may not specifically subscribe to these platforms for regional sports coverage, the repeated removal of RSNs highlights the increasing complexities for sports enthusiasts who have cut the cord.

The frequent disruptions in RSN availability create a significant headache for fans seeking consistent access to their local teams. The appeal of streaming services often lies in their affordability and flexibility compared to traditional cable packages. However, the constant threat of losing access to essential sports content undermines this value proposition. It forces viewers to constantly reassess their subscription options and potentially switch providers to maintain access to their desired channels.
