MSI Revamps Claw Handheld with Intel Lunar Lake and Fallout Flair

The handheld gaming market is currently brimming with competition, offering a diverse range of alternatives to Valve’s popular Steam Deck. While many of these contenders rely on AMD or Arm-based hardware, MSI has carved a unique niche with its Claw series, powered by Intel processors. Despite facing lukewarm reception for its initial iteration, the Claw, MSI is already poised to release a revamped version: the Claw 8 AI. This updated handheld promises significant improvements, including a newer processor, design tweaks based on user feedback, and a captivating Fallout Edition.

The most prominent upgrade in the Claw 8 AI is undoubtedly its processor. MSI’s Computex press release reveals that the device will be equipped with Intel Core Ultra Lunar Lake processors. However, the specific model remains undisclosed. It is reasonable to assume that the Claw 8 AI will feature a processor that represents a step up from the Core Ultra 7-155H and Ultra 5-135H found in the original Claw. This would likely translate to enhanced processing power and improved efficiency, potentially addressing some of the performance concerns raised by reviewers of the initial model. The new processor will also include the next generation of Intel’s Arc integrated graphics, promising further graphical improvements for a smoother gaming experience.

While MSI has not yet announced a specific launch date for the Claw 8 AI, the inclusion of Intel Core Ultra Lunar Lake processors suggests a release sometime in or after the third quarter of 2024. This timeframe aligns with the expected availability of these new Intel processors.

Beyond the core processing unit, MSI has emphasized that the Claw 8 AI incorporates design adjustments based on user feedback received since the launch of the original Claw. These improvements include the addition of a second USB-C (Thunderbolt 4) port, providing greater connectivity options for peripherals and accessories. The shoulder buttons have also been redesigned with enhanced tactility, aiming to provide a more satisfying and responsive gaming experience. To address battery life concerns, the Claw 8 AI will feature a larger battery, potentially allowing for longer gaming sessions on the go. The device will also come with a smaller bundled charger, enhancing its portability and convenience.

As the name implies, the Claw 8 AI will feature an enlarged 8-inch display, providing a more immersive visual experience. However, details regarding the display’s resolution and refresh rate remain scarce. It is currently unknown whether MSI will maintain the original Claw’s 1080p resolution and 120Hz refresh rate or opt for an upgrade. An improved resolution or refresh rate would further enhance the visual fidelity and smoothness of gameplay.

Adding a touch of flair to the Claw lineup, MSI has unveiled a new Fallout Edition. This special edition handheld is adorned with a unique aesthetic inspired by the iconic post-apocalyptic game series. While MSI’s press materials do not explicitly state whether the Fallout Edition is based on the original Claw or the new Claw 8 AI, visual cues suggest that it is likely a customized version of the original model. The Fallout Edition features a distinct case and buttons designed to evoke the look and feel of the Pip-Boy computers found in the Fallout universe. The design incorporates the Vault-Tec logo on the right side and what appears to be a rad meter on the left, further enhancing its thematic appeal.

While the Fallout Edition is visually appealing, the timing of its release may be questionable. Given that the original Claw is already considered by some to be nearing obsolescence, the launch of a Fallout Edition based on that model may not generate significant excitement among potential buyers. Many gamers interested in a Fallout-themed handheld may prefer to wait for the newer and more powerful Claw 8 AI.

The tech press release also mentions Michael, a seasoned technology journalist with a decade of experience covering various aspects of the industry. Michael’s expertise extends from Apple products to ZTE devices, and he is known for his in-depth knowledge of keyboards and PC hardware. His background includes bylines in reputable publications such as Android Police, Digital Trends, Wired, Lifehacker, and How-To Geek. Michael’s coverage of industry events like CES and Mobile World Congress further demonstrates his expertise and insights. Based in Pennsylvania, Michael’s interests extend beyond technology, as he enjoys kayaking in his free time.

In conclusion, the MSI Claw 8 AI represents a significant upgrade over its predecessor, addressing many of the criticisms leveled against the original model. With its Intel Core Ultra Lunar Lake processors, design tweaks based on user feedback, and larger display, the Claw 8 AI aims to provide a more compelling handheld gaming experience. The addition of a Fallout Edition adds a touch of visual appeal, although its timing may limit its market appeal. As the handheld gaming market continues to evolve, the MSI Claw 8 AI seeks to establish itself as a viable contender, leveraging Intel hardware and user-centric design to stand out from the competition. The success of the Claw 8 AI will ultimately depend on its performance, battery life, and overall value proposition compared to other handheld gaming devices. The upcoming release of the Claw 8 AI will undoubtedly be closely watched by gamers and industry analysts alike.
