Bill Demory, Former New York Jets Quarterback, Succumbs to Prostate Cancer and Parkinson’s Disease
Former New York Jets quarterback Bill Demory, a stalwart of the 1970s Jets team, passed away earlier this month at the age of 74, as per an online obituary. Demory’s demise was a result of a protracted battle with prostate cancer and Parkinson’s disease, as reported by AZ Central. The obituary states that he passed away peacefully on February 14th.
Early Life and Football Career
Born in Iowa, Demory relocated to Arizona with his family during his youth and attended high school in Phoenix. His passion for football led him to join the University of Arizona, where he excelled as a quarterback for the Wildcats for three seasons before embarking on a professional career.
During his collegiate tenure, Demory amassed impressive statistics, amassing 3,268 passing yards and 28 touchdown passes in 27 games. Despite Arizona’s lack of a winning record during his time there, Demory’s talent and leadership were evident.
New York Jets Tenure
In 1973, Demory joined the New York Jets and became a member of a quarterbacking contingent that included Al Woodall and the legendary Joe Namath. That season, Demory started in three of the six games he played in, accumulating 159 passing yards, two touchdown passes, and eight interceptions. However, the Jets struggled that season, posting a disappointing 4-10 record.
The following year, with Namath leading the charge, the Jets improved to a 7-7 record, but Demory did not see any playing time. Nonetheless, Demory’s contributions to the team during his time in New York were significant, as he provided a solid backup presence for the Jets.
Post-Football Career and Teaching
After his playing days came to an end, Demory pursued a career in academia. From 1999 to 2016, he served as an economics professor at Arizona Western and Central Arizona College. He also worked as an adjunct teacher at Mesa Community College from 1998 to 2024.
Legacy and Personal Life
Bill Demory’s legacy extends beyond his football career. He was a dedicated educator who inspired countless students throughout his years in academia. Known for his strong work ethic and passion for teaching, Demory left a lasting impact on the lives of those he encountered.
In his personal life, Demory was a devoted family man. He is survived by his wife, two sons, two daughters, 14 grandchildren, two step-children, and his brother. Demory’s unwavering spirit and indomitable will will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Arizona Wildcats Quarterback Legacy
Prior to Nick Foles’ NFL debut, Bill Demory was one of only three quarterbacks from the University of Arizona to have started in an NFL game. Eddie Wilson and Fred Enke are the other two quarterbacks who have achieved this distinction. Demory’s contributions to the Wildcats football program and the Jets organization will be forever remembered.
