MSNBC Overhauls Primetime Lineup, Axes ‘The ReidOut’

MSNBC is undergoing a major network shakeup, with Joy Reid’s primetime program, "The ReidOut," set to be canceled, Fox News Digital has learned.

Symone Sanders-Townsend, Alicia Menendez, and Michael Steele to Replace Reid

Reid’s 7 p.m. ET slot will be filled by a new show featuring Symone Sanders-Townsend, a former spokesperson to Vice President Kamala Harris; Alicia Menendez, daughter of former Senator Bob Menendez; and RNC Chair turned MSNBC host Michael Steele. Reid will host her final "ReidOut" this week.

Additional Changes Across Dayside, Weekends, and Primetime

The "ReidOut" cancellation is just one of several programming changes planned by MSNBC’s new president, Rebecca Kutler. Dayside, weekend, and primetime programming will see adjustments, with Jen Psaki, host of "Inside with Jen Psaki," expected to receive more airtime. Alex Wagner, who was sidelined from hosting a primetime program when Rachel Maddow shifted to a nightly schedule, will remain with the network as a correspondent.

MSNBC declined to comment when contacted by Fox News Digital.

Psaki’s ‘Inside’ Expands, Menendez Makes Primetime History

"Inside with Jen Psaki" has been MSNBC’s most-watched weekend program since its 2023 launch, fueling rumors of increased airtime for the former Biden administration press secretary. The new show hosted by Townsend, Steele, and Menendez, titled "The Weekend," will expand to two hours and spill into primetime on Mondays, with a one-hour runtime Tuesday through Friday. Menendez will become the first Latina woman to host a primetime cable news program on MSNBC.

Eugene Daniels and Melissa Murray in Talks for Network Roles

MSNBC is reportedly in discussions with Politico’s Eugene Daniels and New York University law professor Melissa Murray for potential roles on the network. The network is also seeking a head of talent, head of newsgathering, a Washington bureau chief, and a head of content strategy.

Washington Bureau Expansion and Spinoff Preparation

MSNBC plans to establish a Washington bureau and increase its domestic and international correspondent presence ahead of parent company Comcast’s planned spinoff of several NBCUniversal cable networks, including MSNBC. The move will separate NBC News from the cable network that it has long shared resources with.

‘The ReidOut’ Ratings Decline and Controversies

"The ReidOut" has faced declining viewership, averaging 973,000 total viewers in February 2025, down 28% from the same month in 2024. Reid has also been at the center of several controversies, including anti-Trump rhetoric and comparisons between the Trump administration and Nazi Germany.

Hacking Accusation and Emotional On-Air Admission

In 2018, Reid claimed that homophobic comments on her old blog, "The Reid Report," were not written by her, blaming hackers and involving the FBI. However, she later admitted that it was unlikely she was hacked but couldn’t recall making the remarks, for which she apologized.

Conclusion

MSNBC’s primetime lineup overhaul signals a significant shift at the network, with a focus on fresh faces and strategic programming changes. Despite the departure of Joy Reid, the network remains committed to providing progressive and insightful news coverage to its viewers.
