Kamala Harris Inspires with Call to Action at NAACP Image Awards
Los Angeles, CA – Former Vice President Kamala Harris delivered a rousing speech on Saturday at the 2025 NAACP Image Awards, urging viewers to resist cynicism and destruction amid current challenges.
Harris received the Chairman’s Award, bestowed upon individuals who excel in public service and leverage their platforms for meaningful change. She expressed her gratitude, acknowledging her childhood inspiration from the NAACP’s work.
"I chose a life of public service in part because of the NAACP," Harris remarked. "Your unwavering advocacy has been a beacon of hope and resilience for generations of Black Americans."
While not explicitly naming former President Donald Trump, her 2024 election opponent, Harris alluded to the weight of history, the threats facing society, and the urgent need for citizens to mobilize.
"We have done it before," Harris emphasized. "We organized, we mobilized, we educated, and we advocated. Our strength flows from our faith and our refusal to surrender to destruction, not because it is easy, but because it is necessary."
Harris stressed that the future of America would not be solely determined by political leaders or the wealthy, but by the collective efforts of "we the people." Her words resonated deeply with the audience, who gave her a standing ovation.
NAACP Board of Directors Chair Leon W. Russell introduced Harris, praising her 2024 presidential campaign as a "force of nature" and expressing confidence in her continued inspiration for generations to come.
Past recipients of the Chairman’s Award include prominent figures such as former President Barack Obama, Representative Maxine Waters, Samuel L. Jackson, and Forest Whitaker.
Dave Chappelle Honored with Presidents Award
Comedian Dave Chappelle received the President’s Award, recognizing his outstanding achievements and public service. He described the honor as the most special he had ever received, acknowledging the NAACP’s renewed relevance in the current climate.
"It feels good to know that we’re not in it alone," Chappelle remarked.
Keke Palmer Triumphs as Entertainer of the Year
Actress and singer Keke Palmer was named Entertainer of the Year, expressing her surprise and gratitude for the award, particularly over fellow nominee Cynthia Erivo.
"It’s so important that we all come together and celebrate one another," Palmer said. "Nobody has uplifted me more than you," she added, referring to the audience.
‘The Six Triple Eight’ Dominates with Multiple Awards
Tyler Perry’s "The Six Triple Eight" triumphed at the awards, winning Best Picture, Best Actress for Kerry Washington, Best Supporting Actress for Ebony Obsidian, and Best Ensemble Cast.
Washington urged the audience to embrace their greatness, highlighting the film’s message of empowerment for Black women.
"This evening is about all of us being called into our greatness," Washington said. "Remember your greatness, because that’s what the fight is for."
