France’s Women’s Team off to a Winning Start in the Nations League
Toulouse, France – The French women’s national team kicked off their UEFA Nations League campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Norway on Friday evening.
Despite being under pressure for much of the match, Les Bleues managed to secure the all-important three points thanks to a well-executed corner routine in the second half.
Norway Dominates Possession
From the outset, Norway controlled possession and looked the more dangerous side. The visitors forced France’s defense into several nervous moments, particularly through the lively Amalie Eikeland and the creative Caroline Graham Hansen.
France, on the other hand, struggled to find their rhythm in the opening period. Their passing was sloppy, their movement was slow, and they rarely threatened the Norwegian goal.
France Finds the Breakthrough
However, despite Norway’s dominance, France managed to find the breakthrough with 17 minutes remaining. Selma Bacha’s inswinging corner was met with a towering header from Marie-Antoinette Katoto, who directed the ball into the net with her chest.
It was a moment of brilliance from the Paris Saint-Germain striker, who had been starved of service for much of the match. Her goal proved to be the match-winner, as France held on for a narrow victory.
France Impresses with Defense
While the goal was a moment of joy for Les Bleues, it was their defense that earned the most praise. Led by captain Wendie Renard, France’s backline put in a heroic performance to repel Norway’s relentless attacks.
Time and again, Norway threatened to equalize, but they were met with a wall of blue shirts. Griedge Mbock Bathy Nka and Sakina Karchaoui were particularly impressive, making vital interceptions and clearances.
Gignac Praises Team Effort
France head coach Corinne Diacre was understandably delighted with the victory, praising her team’s fighting spirit and resilience.
"We knew it would be a tough match," Diacre said. "Norway is a very good team, but we showed great character and determination to win."
"We were under pressure for most of the game, but we defended well and took our chance when it came."
France will now turn their attention to their next Nations League fixture, a home match against Belgium on Tuesday. Norway, meanwhile, will face Denmark in Oslo on the same day.
