Montpellier’s Midfield Duo Uncertain for Nice Clash Amid Injury Concerns
Montpellier’s hopes of securing a positive result against high-flying Nice on Sunday have been dealt a blow with the news that two of their key midfielders, Jordan Ferri and Joris Chotard, are doubtful for the encounter.
Ferri’s Illness, Chotard’s Thigh Issue Raise Concerns
Coach Jean-Louis Gasset revealed at a press conference on Friday that both Ferri and Chotard are facing fitness battles ahead of the Ligue 1 matchday 23 clash.
"We’ve had two problems," Gasset explained. "One is Jordan Ferri, who has had the flu for three days. The other affects Joris Chotard, who has been struggling with tightness behind his thigh. It seems to be getting a little better, but we’ll see tomorrow before we leave."
Ferri, 32, and Chotard, 23, have been regular starters for Montpellier this season, featuring in the majority of games since the campaign began.
Over a Dozen Players Unavailable for Montpellier
In addition to the midfield concerns, Montpellier will be without a further 10 players for the trip to Nice, primarily in the defense. Key defensive players such as Omeragic, Maksimovic, Sylla, and Modibo Sagnan (ruled out with a calf injury sustained 15 days ago against Strasbourg) are all unavailable.
Kouyaté Returns as Bright Spot
Despite the mounting injury woes, Montpellier have welcomed the return of midfielder Kiki Kouyaté, who has been sidelined for the last two matches due to the after-effects of a knee operation. Kouyaté’s availability provides a boost to Gasset’s options.
Montpellier’s Struggles Continue
Montpellier currently languish at the bottom of the Ligue 1 standings, having failed to secure a league victory since October. The visit to Nice, who are third in the table and chasing a Champions League qualification spot, will provide a daunting challenge.
Nice Aiming to Stay in Title Race
Nice, on the other hand, are in fine form and will be looking to maintain their momentum in the title race. Coach Lucien Favre’s side has won four of their last five league matches and will be confident of extending their winning streak against a depleted Montpellier team.
The match between Nice and Montpellier promises to be an intriguing tactical battle, with both teams facing their own unique challenges. Nice will be keen to press home their advantage and solidify their top-three position, while Montpellier will be desperate to end their winless run and move off the foot of the table.
