Surge in Flu-Related Deaths in Thuringia
Thuringia has experienced a concerning rise in flu-related fatalities during the ongoing influenza season. The latest statistics from the Thuringian Ministry of Health indicate that 23 individuals have succumbed to the virus, surpassing the previous season’s toll by a significant margin.
Immediate and Indirect Fatalities
Out of the 23 fatalities, 17 were directly attributed to influenza as the primary cause of death. The remaining six patients passed away due to other complications while battling the viral infection.
Age Distribution of Victims
A vast majority of the deceased were elderly, aged 60 years or older. However, the virus has also claimed the life of an individual belonging to the younger age group of 10-15 years.
Seasonal Comparison
During the 2023/24 influenza season, Thuringia recorded a total of 30 flu-related deaths by mid-April. The current season has already surpassed that number by mid-February, underscoring the severity of the ongoing outbreak.
Surge in Influenza Cases
Since the commencement of the influenza season in early October until mid-February, over 10,700 cases of the flu have been reported to health authorities in Thuringia. The number of reported new cases witnessed a substantial jump in the preceding week, reaching 2,019.
Cluster Outbreaks
Health officials have identified several clusters of influenza infections, with outbreaks involving five or more individuals reported in kindergartens, hospitals, and a nursing home.
Medical Consultation Rates
An estimated 3,000 individuals per 100,000 inhabitants in Thuringia sought medical attention for influenza and other respiratory illnesses during the second week of February. This translates to approximately 65,000 doctor visits.
High Incidence in Young Children
Children under the age of four continue to exhibit the highest incidence of influenza infections.
