Germany’s Perilous Hours: Immigration, Extremism, and a Weakening Ukraine Commitment

By Andreas Tobler and Sandro Benini (Tribune de Genève)

Germany is grappling with a confluence of pressing challenges, including violent attacks perpetrated by asylum seekers with mental health issues. These incidents have ignited a contentious debate on immigration, feeding into the rise of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. Amidst calls for a negotiated peace in Ukraine that would undermine Germany’s support for Kyiv, the nation is facing a pivotal moment.

The Road to Division

How did Germany, once a beacon of liberal democracy, find itself in such a precarious position? According to German sociologist Oliver Nachtwey, a professor of sociology at the University of Basel and co-author of the bestselling book "Gekränkte Freiheit" (Wounded Freedom), the current erosion of trust in liberal democracy stems from a combination of economic pressures and failing infrastructure.

Nachtwey argues that globalization has exacerbated socioeconomic inequalities, leaving many Germans feeling economically insecure and neglected. Simultaneously, the country’s infrastructure, including transportation and public services, has suffered from underinvestment, further eroding citizens’ confidence in the government’s ability to address their concerns.

This sense of disenfranchisement and insecurity has provided fertile ground for the AfD, which has capitalized on the growing discontent among the German populace. The party’s anti-immigration rhetoric and promises to restore German sovereignty have resonated with voters who feel alienated from the political establishment and threatened by the perceived influx of foreigners.

The Ukraine Dilemma

Germany’s stance on the Ukraine crisis has further exacerbated these divisions. While the government has been a staunch supporter of Kyiv, providing military and financial assistance, a vocal minority within the German population has advocated for a negotiated settlement that would involve concessions to Russia.

This pacifist sentiment is driven by concerns about the potential for a wider conflict and the economic fallout that could result from a protracted war. However, critics argue that appeasing Russia would be a betrayal of Ukraine’s sovereignty and would embolden Moscow to further aggression in the future.

Elon Musk’s Endorsement and the Rise of Extremism

The situation in Germany has taken a further ominous turn with the recent endorsement of the AfD by Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX. Musk’s vocal support for a negotiated peace in Ukraine and his anti-immigration stance have raised concerns about the growing influence of far-right ideologies on social media platforms.

The Way Forward

Germany faces a daunting task in navigating the challenges it confronts. To address the root causes of its current divisions, the government must prioritize economic growth and social inclusion, ensuring that all citizens have a stake in the country’s prosperity.

Moreover, the government must invest in infrastructure and public services, demonstrating its commitment to the well-being of its citizens. By rebuilding trust in the state, Germany can create a more resilient and cohesive society.

On the Ukraine crisis, Germany must maintain its unwavering support for Kyiv, recognizing the importance of upholding international law and deterring Russian aggression. However, the government should also engage in diplomatic efforts to explore potential paths to a negotiated settlement that preserves Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

By confronting these challenges head-on and fostering a spirit of unity and inclusivity, Germany can overcome this pivotal moment in its history and emerge stronger on the other side.
