Germany’s Perilous Hours: Immigration, Extremism, and a Weakening Ukraine Commitment

Germany is grappling with a confluence of pressing challenges, including violent attacks perpetrated by asylum seekers with mental health issues. These incidents have ignited a contentious debate on immigration, feeding into the rise of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. Amidst calls for a negotiated peace in Ukraine that would undermine Germany’s support for Kyiv, the nation is facing a pivotal moment.
The Road to Division
How did Germany, once a beacon of liberal democracy, find itself in such a precarious position? According to German sociologist Oliver Nachtwey, a professor of sociology at the University of Basel and co-author of the bestselling book "Gekränkte Freiheit" (Wounded Freedom), the current erosion of trust in liberal democracy stems from a combination of economic pressures and failing infrastructure.
Nachtwey argues that globalization has exacerbated socioeconomic inequalities, leaving many Germans feeling economically insecure and neglected.
