Saorge: A Unique Village in the Alpes-Maritimes, Vying for the Coveted Title of ‘France’s Favorite Village’
Amidst the sprawling landscape of the Alpes-Maritimes, a single commune stands out as a bastion of left-wing ideology. Saorge, perched high in the verdant Roya Valley, is a village of just 400 souls, yet it holds a remarkable distinction: in the recent European elections, it alone in the region cast a majority vote for the La France Insoumise (LFI) list led by Manon Aubry.
This unwavering political allegiance has earned Saorge the reputation as the last bastion of the extreme left in the department. However, beyond its political leanings, Saorge is also recognized for its exceptional architectural and urbanistic heritage, which has recently thrust it into the spotlight as a contender for the prestigious title of ‘France’s Favorite Village’ in 2025.
Architectural Splendor and a Vestige of the Past
Nestled on a mountainside at an altitude of 800 meters, Saorge offers a captivating glimpse into a bygone era. From afar, it resembles a Tibetan village, with its narrow facades adorned with the characteristic violet-hued lauze stone, juxtaposed against lush vegetation.
As one ventures closer, the village reveals its true essence. A labyrinth of colorful alleys, lined with charming old facades, unravels, leading to the picturesque Place de l’Église Saint-Sauveur. The architecture is reminiscent of the neighboring Italian region of Liguria, featuring tall, slightly irregular stone houses painted in hues of ochre, yellow, and pink, conforming to the contours of the terrain. Sculpted lintels, ornate wooden or wrought iron balconies, and cobblestone streets lined with vaulted passages, fountains, and washhouses further enhance the village’s medieval character.
Crowning the village is the former Franciscan convent, an architectural masterpiece in the Baroque style. During the summer months, the monastery’s walls transform into a haven for writers seeking solace and inspiration. The edifice serves as an artist’s residency, fostering creativity and artistic exchange.
A Tranquil Haven and Vibrant Community
Tranquility is an intrinsic part of Saorge’s identity. The village is entirely pedestrianized, allowing only the murmuring of ancient stone fountains to break the silence. Yet, Saorge is far from a ghost town. The Place de l’Église is a hub of activity, with cafes, restaurants, a honey shop, a library, and various local businesses operating daily.
Tourists, hikers, and pilgrims alike frequent the village, drawn to its numerous churches, chapels, and the iconic monastery. Despite its small size, Saorge boasts a remarkable sense of community, with numerous associations actively contributing to village life.
Aspirations for National Recognition
Mayor Brigitte Bresc expressed her excitement at Saorge’s inclusion in the preliminary selection for France Television’s ‘Favorite Village’ competition. "Whether we win or not, it’s a wonderful opportunity to showcase our village," she said. "Hopefully, it will attract benefactors, as we desperately need funding to maintain our communal heritage."
To date, no village from the Provence-Alpes-Côte-d’Azur region has ever claimed the coveted title of ‘France’s Favorite Village.’ Saorge aims to break this streak, hoping to bring recognition and support to its unique and captivating enclave.
